DH and I need help with picking a girl's name.

We had Sophie picked out from about 20 weeks, but now I hear it everywhere and I've gone off it a bit. I still think it's a lovely name, and I'm finding it hard not to think of her as Sophie but I feel it's quite an overused name. (Then again, so is Emily)

So I'm looking for suggestions really. OH and I have a surname that ends in a ree sound, so most names ending in y are out. We prefer traditional names, either English or Scottish (we're both scottish)

Names on the list so far:

Sophie
Amelia
Emily
Isla
Niamh
Alice

Names we've discarded as first names:

Grace
Elizabeth
Harriet
Phillipa
Olivia
Poppy
Isabelle
Evelyn
Eilidh

I like Isla and Niamh the best. Others are lovely, but perhaps a little too popular?

Wavedancer · 21/10/2008 08:07

Personally, I'd stick with Sophie. It's what we would have gone with if we were having a girl - either that or Sophia, which is equally lovely.

Yes, it's in the top ten, but it's soooo pretty and so classic as well - unlikely to age like some of the trendier names you hear these days.

frazzledoldbag34 · 21/10/2008 09:07

I was also going to suggest Sophia. More unusual and very elegant.
Or what about:
Natasha
Camilla
Claudia
Annabel(la)
Arabella
Flora
Alicia? (if you like Alice)

Stars22 · 21/10/2008 09:31

I'd stick with Sophie because i like it and its my name. I know alot of people say its one of those popular names and there will be loads around, but i only know a couple of Sophies, I only know 1 child called Sophie. I know about 10 Emilys and Chloes.

LuLuBai · 21/10/2008 12:34

Love Isla from your list. Sophie is also very pretty. It's always been popular but never excessively so.

How about Laura, Iona, Eva

Mung · 21/10/2008 12:39

Sophie is a classic name and is very pretty. If you like then go for it, it really doesn't matter if others have the same name.

saggyhairyarse · 21/10/2008 20:19

Doesn't Sophie have the 'y/ree' issue?

I LOVE Sophie though, and there aren't that many of them.

RachieB · 21/10/2008 20:56

I love Isla out of your list

Liffey · 21/10/2008 21:00

Sophie - pretty but so popular it leaves no impression iyswim. Washes over me. Susie would make me pay attention much more.

Amelia - I don't like the meeeeeel sound in the middle.
Emily - a very pretty name. Fewer Emilys than Sophies in my own micro World!
Isla - lovely, very nice for a Scottish family.
Niamh - ditto, Irish and Scottish? Better as a mn though imo
Alice - I like this, but more a middle name imo.

I'm just playing with combos here

Amelia Skye
Susie Niamh
Amelia Niamh
Alice Isla
Alice Niamh Iona

Liffey · 21/10/2008 21:01

Frazzledbag, wasn't Annabel the wife of King ARthur or something? There is a Scottish connection there somewhere.. I willl google now.

Annabel Skye is an elegant nod towards Scotland.

Liffey · 21/10/2008 21:04

Annabel Drummond was born circa 1350 at Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.3,4 She was the daughter of Sir John Drummond, 11th of Lennox and Mary Montifex.2,3 She married Robert III Stewart, King of Scotland, son of Robert II Stewart, King of Scotland and Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan, on 13 March 1366. She died circa October 1401 at Scone Palace, Scone, Perthshire, Scotland.3
From 13 March 1366, her married name became Stewart. As a result of her marriage, Annabel Drummond was styled as Queen Consort Annabella of Scotland on 15 August 1390.3

Fascinating stuff.

MaryMungo · 21/10/2008 21:12

If you liked Sophie, why not Sylvie? Very similiar feel, but not half so overused

Liffey · 21/10/2008 21:15

Yes, Sylvie lovely. I would think oooooh if I heard Sylvie or Susie, and I would think nothing much at all if I heard Sophie (nice name though it is)

CuppaTeaJanice · 21/10/2008 21:29

What about Sapphire? Similar to Sophie.....

frazzledoldbag34 · 21/10/2008 21:34

OOOH Liffey, you've just made my night. I'm desperate to call my new baby Annabel (if it's a girl!) and my DH is Scottish and prefers Scottish names. Will show him this! (We live quite near Scone, Perthshire too).
Perfect.
You're a star.
(You may well just have saved me from MORAG - his current favorite - yes, really!)
(Sorry anybody if your name is Morag )

And Annabel Skye is GORGEOUS! Love it.

Liffey · 21/10/2008 21:46

You are welcome! No more children for me but I do love naming them!! I like Morag too in an edgy cool sort of way but would never use it as a first name. It's cool but it's a bit ugly .
Annabel Skye Morag would make a really cool Scottish name, in a non-McScottish way.

blackhawk · 21/10/2008 22:02

Wow, thanks girls! This is a brilliant help! Not only have you made me feel a bit better about having Sophie on my list, but there are some great suggestions too.

I'd glad to see people like Niamh and Isla too as they are a bit more different that names like Emily and Sophie.

I asked DH what he thought about Annabel and we both really like it, so it's definitely going on the list.

Liffey, thanks for the comments and names suggestions. I think you're right about Alice sounding better as a middle name.

MrsMattie · 21/10/2008 22:04

I don't know about where you are, but where I am (London) virtually all of your other names are more common than Sophie for babies / toddlers at the moment (Niamh and Alice perhaps not, but the others, definitely). There seem to be a lot of teenage Sophies around, though.

frazzledoldbag34 · 21/10/2008 22:08

blackhawk - so glad you like Annabel! Gorgeous name IMHO anyway. Where we live in Scotland I don't know of any others (well, one baby with Annabel for middle name, but that's it).
Best of luck and come back and tell us what you do eventually go for. x

blackhawk · 21/10/2008 22:15

MrsMattie, we're in the north of Scotland DH and I know of one Sophie but I went to school with 5 Emilys in my year!

frazzle, I will do. DH seems keen on Annabel Niamh, Annabel Rose or Annabel Skye

funkypumpkin · 22/10/2008 09:42

ooh loving Annabel Skye a gorgeous name.
All the very best of luck.

frazzledoldbag34 · 22/10/2008 10:10

blackhawk - I like all three of those options. Lovely. Best of luck.

BlueChampagne · 22/10/2008 13:06

Here are a few more suggestions. I'm not an Annabel fan but that's just me.

Shona
Heather
Jean/Janette
Catriona
Kirstin
Elsbeth
