Boy's names please, not too popular, not too wacky - leaning towards Celtic but all suggestions welcome

We are really struggling to think of a boy's name that is not too popular (trying to avoid names in the top 20-30). We'd ideally like something slightly unusual but not too wacky. We are leaning towards Celtic names as we are both Scottish but open to all suggestions (especially German as DP has German blood). The kind of name we like is:

Ewan/Euan
Finlay
Dylan
Connor

These are all very popular in Scotland at the moment. We also have to avoid names begining with 'W' due to surname. Any suggestions will be gratefully receieved

Kie - saxon for John...

TheSmallClanger · 17/10/2008 22:23

Ross
Duncan
Rory
Thorsten
Rudy
Jonas
Mattias (sp?)

My favourite hypothetical boy's name is Dietrich, although it wouldn't work here, even if I could have one. I met a lovely Ulf-Dietrich once, what a great name.

Lots of great names to discuss with DP - thanks . RachieB I love all 4 names you mention - Ellis is a strong contender on our girls list.

anyone fancy a wee Tavish? (dh is Hamish)

milliemayhem · 19/10/2008 22:18

My little boys called Finley. Hes 5, wasn't really popular back then and still don't hear of many Finleys. Everyone we meet says its a gorg name, and it suits him. Hes blonde and lovely and a real cheeky imp. We call him Finger Fin cos hes ALWAYS touching things he shouldn't!

mummypingu · 20/10/2008 20:26

erm Tavish was a serious suggestion!!

mammajamma · 20/10/2008 21:12

How about Brodie?
It's DS2's name and we love it! It's very unusual, i've met no-one with the same name as him.

ilovemyflipflops · 20/10/2008 23:40

I like a bit unusual but not wacky names too.

Heres my boy list

Isaac (my ds)
Eben/Eban
Rowan
Solomon
Dolan
Jago
Rowan

wonka · 20/10/2008 23:48

I have a Cormac we call him Mac for short!

mibbes · 21/10/2008 21:56

I love Brodie and it was on my list but we know a dog caled Brodie and DP vetoed based on that

i have a struan - think it might be getting more popular now but still unusual enough for some people not to have heard of it.

i did think when i read the thread title, that you were considering calling your ds after the football team - am glad to see thats not what you meant

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/10/2008 16:09

Duncan. A fine name for a boy.

randasmummy · 31/10/2008 14:58

Rory - can also be spelt in a very Celtic way but I wont attempt it here!

atterual · 31/10/2008 15:06

My DIL is due next month and they are expecting a boy and are naming him Ferris. I believe that is scottish in some way!!! what does anyone else think of that name, Im not at all sure about it!!!

halfaquark · 31/10/2008 15:12

Ferris akex me think of fairgrounds or days off. Neither of which are bad things but I'm still not sure it would make my personal shortlist og great names...

yomellamoHelly · 31/10/2008 15:14

Dh and I really like Dermot, but hesitate to use it because of its Celtic connection and the fact that we have none.

halfaquark · 31/10/2008 15:15

akex = makes
og = of

halfaquark · 31/10/2008 15:16

Quite a few people would probably make a big brother/x factor connection rather than a celt one with Dermot.

My DS1 is Declan too
DS1 is Breyen

RedOnHerBeheadedHead · 01/11/2008 11:09

sorry, i meant DS2 is Breyen

thumblesswitch · 01/11/2008 11:19

love Fergus, I wanted it for my DS but DH said no , ditto Felix.

Declan always makes me think of the fat one in The Commitments, sadly.

What about Jasper?

mibbes · 02/11/2008 09:51

Thanks ladies, some beauties there. Declan and Dermot both lovely names
