Nickname for Martha?

I have my heart set on Martha Lily if we have a girl but DH has just admitted (after months of me going on about it) that he's not keen on Martha, one reason being that he doesn't like the nickname Mattie. He hasn't ruled it out and has said he will still consider it if I can think of another nickname/shortened version.

Incidentally he wants Lily as a first name, which I am not vehemently opposed to, as Lily is my nan's name and we want it to feature, but it seems to be very popular at the moment and I was after something a bit more unusual.

Any suggestions?? I can only think of Mattie (which I like) and Martie (which I don't)...

My sister's name is Martha and no one has ever called her anything but "Martha".

findtheriver · 13/10/2008 21:19

Mo

I wouldn't shorten it TBH, it's only two syllables so hardly likely to leave you breathless.

As far as I know Mattie is traditionally a shortening for Mathilda rather than Martha anyway...

It's more about having a pet name than needing to shorten it. We are inveterate givers of names other than the correct ones to friends, family and pets...guess you either do or don't!

I have a Martha
Martha Rose
No shortenings at all
We call her Muffin or Marma as nicknames. 'Marma' was how she first pronounced her own name..and it kind of stuck.
Never heard of Mattie as a shortening btw
Dh wasn't keen on Martha before i had her (he didn't get a choice btw ...if i had a girl it just had to be Martha). He thinks it's a really beautiful name now though.

we have a martha and it's never been shortened by anyone. such a pretty name on it's own

AtheneNoctua · 15/10/2008 13:15

My sister was a complete tattle tale (nark) when we were kids. So, we used to call her Manarka. Does that help?

nooka · 15/10/2008 13:28

Nicknames don't have to related to given names. If you are the sort of people who use diminutives then you will find something! My Grandmother hated shortenings, so called her children Clare and Ian. My Grandfather who liked nicknames called them "Chip" (he was very very similar to his Dad) and "BelleBee" from Clarabella (not that she was called that. My sister has two very short names for her children, and they get loads of lengthened versions (mostly from her).

But if you like lots of shortenings then Martha probably isn't the way to go. Elizabeth is fab for diminitives (I think it has 14 or something slightly crazy like that )

My aunt is a Martha, but is known to all as Mattie..

LuLuBai · 15/10/2008 14:25

The only one I know is never shortened, but occasionally lengthened to 'Mini Mars Bar'.

FimboGotAxed · 15/10/2008 14:28

we know a Martha - shortened to Mimi which i think is lovely! As is Martha as a stand alone name

moonincancer · 16/10/2008 21:18

art? Martha is a wonderful name btw

averageitalian · 22/04/2020 09:41

So as a Martha myself, I can tell you there are no possible nicknames. I mean I’ve tried everything, and so have my friends and boyfriend. It is impossible so I just go by Martha and if you want to be trendy use something like M.

123Dancewithme · 22/04/2020 10:45

M
Mari

Whatsyourflava · 22/04/2020 10:53

Martha is one of my very favourite names - I LOVE it!

Margot or Marley or Margaret (Maggie) also nice

daisypond · 22/04/2020 12:28

ZOMBIE Thread! Martha will be nearly 12 years old now.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 22/04/2020 12:30

Mattie

Orphlids · 22/04/2020 15:39

Mimi? Bit of a stretch, but might work?

Whatsyourflava · 22/04/2020 15:42

@daisypond thank you for this!! I hadn’t noticed! There’s been so many Zombie threads I keep wasting my time giving advice on today 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Why would you shorten Martha to Mattie. It's just as long.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/04/2020 23:55

I know this is a zombie, but it's about a name in general - not one particular situation that only pertains to one specific person.

I really love the name Martha, but I think, if you're looking to shorten it, you need to amend the sounds a bit, as none of the constituents stand well in isolation. You could drop the 'M', I suppose, but that doesn't really have the desired effect!

I think that Miffy is such a cute pet name for a child (maybe I'm biased from all of the wonderful Dick Bruna books), but also quite funky both for a teen and for a young and then middle-aged woman, and also unusual in a stylish way for an older lady.

The Mimi suggestion above just reminded me of that episode of Outnumbered, where Pete's head has been turned by Mia, whom everybody knows as Mimi for short - and Sue shouts at him exasperatedly, asking how he could possibly fall for a woman so stupid that she abbreviates her name by making it longer Grin

AlliKaneSon · 23/04/2020 01:44

I know a Martha whose dad calls her ‘Marge’!
