does it have too many negative connotations to be used? Will it be used as an excuse for teasing?

Well, I do kind of think of Myra Hess (famous pianist) as well as Hindley.

nooka · 09/10/2008 19:37

I don't think it is a very attractive name in any case. Given that there are so many many names to choose from I can't see why you would want to use this one. I don't think her peers would tease her, but I do think adults would wonder why you chose it. dd used to go to school with a child called Attila. I never thought twice about the kid, just at the parents. I think this would be similar.

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 09/10/2008 19:39

No i staright away thought Hindley - that said she is dead (allegedly).

kalo12 · 09/10/2008 19:40

its too doomed. choose another name. I really like Diana but there is just no way I could. there are lots of beautiful names, i'm sure you will find one.
Lara
Myla
Myriam
Moira

Tommy · 09/10/2008 19:42

I haver a friend called Myra - have never associated her with Hindley (of course)

I also thought of The Women's Room - she was a strong Myra. We need to reclaim the name!

chipmonkey · 09/10/2008 19:47

One of the loveliest girls I ever worked with was called Myra.

boolean · 09/10/2008 21:05

It's a tricky one - I agree that reclaiming a lovely name is a good thing but if you are already having doubts then you might regret it.

It may depend on what your surname is too - if it's a 2-syllable name ending in a 'y' or 'ie' sound then perhaps not, otherwise it might be OK - eg. Myra Langley not good but Myra Jones good?

i honestlt think that the taboo is as good as passed

if you named your child it now then by the time she is old enough to CARE Ms Hindley will have been dead 15 years

Fred West hasn't bothered any one - nor his wife Rose

It is a lovely name - reclaim it!

Elasticwoman · 09/10/2008 22:00

How about Cruella?

Ronaldinhio · 09/10/2008 22:08

what about twinning it with rose?

Zazette · 09/10/2008 22:14

I have a lovely aunt called Myra, I have never once in all the years I've known her thought of Myra Hindley in connection with her. How people react when they're looking for trouble on a names thread and how they react in real life may not be at all the same.

NotAnOtterinaPoolOfSpew · 09/10/2008 22:26

agree zazette

soopysock · 09/10/2008 23:36

I don't think anyone is looking for trouble in this case, I think they're just being honest. Hindley and the Moors Murders was my first thought.
I think it is still unusable.

Remember Myra is unusual even with her generation (I know of one but she was named before the murders, and if that makes sense isn't so bad). That's why the name Myra is so identifiable with Hindley. If she'd been called Elizabeth Hindley you wouldn't have needed to start the thread.

Fred and Rose are common names in their own right, the murderers aren't our first or only association!!

Hinley is more well known than Myra Hess and the Women's Room is Mira

soopysock · 09/10/2008 23:38

Hindley

Pingpong · 10/10/2008 00:22

a boyfriend a few years ago said I should rename my puppy Myra as she was a psycho so he got dumped. I wouldn't call my puppy Myra and definitely not my daughter

BabyBaby123 · 10/10/2008 09:31

no,don't do it. Think of something similiar if you really like the sound of it

noddyholder · 10/10/2008 09:32

no

PonderingThoughts · 10/10/2008 09:54

Sorry but I agree with the majority aswell, if I'm being completely honest.

It is a nice name, but best avoided - really. The first thing I thought, as many others did when I read your post was "Hindley - NO!"

There are lots of very similar alternatives that are beautiful.

Really like Kalo12's suggestions!

Myla - not heard that before but think it's gorgeous!

moyasmum · 10/10/2008 10:16

I love the name, but if you are thinking twice then maybe try another name.
I like the idea of reclaiming names, and it has been a generation ,but if shes sensitve it would only take one brainless person to use it to cause a problem.
(says me who couldnt use Flora - because dh could only see margerine)!

cupsoftea · 10/10/2008 10:20

Maya, Moira instead

tortoiseshellWasMusicaYearsAgo · 10/10/2008 10:26

My first thought was Myra Hess. Which is FINE. It depends whether it will bother YOU and whether it will make you think Myra Hindley - if not then I'm sure it will be fine. Although I don't think it's as pretty as some of the other names. What about going for Miriam/Myriam (my dd is Miriam and it is SUCH a fab name) - if you went for the french spelling with a y - Myriam - then you could shorten to Myra.

soopysock · 10/10/2008 10:55

tortoise - the majority don't think is fine:
Myra Hindley is more infamous and well known
this country than Myra Hess!!!
Hess died before the Moors Murders took place.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 10/10/2008 10:58

My dog is callled Myra and no one ever mentions Hindley when they find out what she is called. Though she is actually named after MH (not by me) she had the name when we got her because she kept attacking all the other puppies.

but as I said its never mentioned by anyone else and I dont get any looks at the vets.

forestmater · 10/10/2008 11:17

Hindley not something I would have named my little girl. Very macabre and taboo.
She wouldn't be teased as such, but is not a nice name to use nowadays. You might be safe in a few decades.
Not one to reclaim
