My 4th girl is due very soon and I love this name. Rude extended family say they have never heard of it and have laughed. Opinions please!

I think that Frieda is prettier than Freya.

Or Frederica (fab, fab name).

artichokes · 07/10/2008 11:02

I like Freya.

Pidge · 07/10/2008 11:04

I love it - it's on our list too (for baby #3, currently 10 days overdue and of unknown gender). My only reservation is it's increasing popularity - it's in the top 25 names, I believe. Whereas my first two dds have quite unusual names.

I never, ever discuss names before the birth with family or friends for exactly this reason ... too many opinions!

greenday · 07/10/2008 11:05

lovely name - definitely know of a girl called Freya.

Pidge · 07/10/2008 11:06

oooh - terrible "it's" "its" inappropriate usage in my last post [pedant's corner rant to self!!]. Only excuse is 41 week pregnant brain syndrome.

LouMacca · 07/10/2008 11:17

Lovely name.

My old boss had a daugher called Freya - she was a joy

What are your other girls called? Would love to know.

funnypeculiar · 07/10/2008 11:25

I would steer clear of it due to its popularity round here, but quite like it. Although agree with Anna888 on Frederica

TinkerBellesMum · 07/10/2008 11:27

I like it (it's one of the SciFi names I'd love to use but won't, SciFi because I'm an SG1 fan not because the name itself is SciFi).

And for people that don't know, here's something to tell them:

Freyja is portrayed as a goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. Blonde, blue-eyed, and beautiful, Freyja is described as the fairest of all goddesses, and people prayed to her for happiness in love. She was also called on to assist childbirths and prayed to for good seasons.

Freyja was also associated with war, battle, death, magic, prophecy, and wealth. She is cited as receiving half of the dead lost in battle in her hall Fólkvangr, whereas Odin would receive the other half at Valhalla.

jojo2008 · 01/11/2008 13:09

I love Feya but have been put off by its popularity ( I am a primary teacher and there seems to be one or two Freyas starting in reception each year now). Also, someone said it's becomming a bit chav ( I disagree). I think it's best just to decide on something and not tell anyone you know ( that's why discussing it on here is so good!) as someone will always put you off!!

PootleAndThePoseysMum · 01/11/2008 13:11

I love the name Freya, very pretty name.

Niecie · 01/11/2008 13:16

It was on our list if we had a girl (we didn't) but I didn't realise it was popular now. I haven't heard of any round here.

I agree - never tell RL people the name you have chosen. People think nothing of being rude about an idea of a name but would usually hold back if they met a real person with that name.

JulesJules · 01/11/2008 13:19

I like the name Freya. It is quite popular now though, if that bothers you.

LynetteScavo · 01/11/2008 13:20

It's lovely. I've heard on MN it's gettiing popular, but I only know one - she's 9.

And don't listen to Anna8888

I too would love to know what your other girls are called.

4inthebed · 01/11/2008 13:25

My freinds litle girl (8yo) is called Freya and she is a delight to be around and the name always makes me think of her and smile, but it is extremly popular around here now too.

But that said if you like it go for it, when we called our youngest Reuben half of the family were not impressed now (at 5.5months) they couldnt imagine him being anything else!!

RachieB · 01/11/2008 14:15

I like it
dont know of any little girls with that name here

MingMingtheWonderPet · 01/11/2008 14:17

Freya is great! (I have a 3yo Freya, and she's the only one I know)

Slight hijack - Pidge, didn't realise you were so close to your third. Good lucck x

Miyazaki · 01/11/2008 14:18

I like it, it is definitely on the rise, if that matters to you.

parachutes · 01/11/2008 14:18

Love it. The only Freya I knew (daughter of a friend) was a joy and absolutely beautiful!

monkeymonkeymonkey · 01/11/2008 14:22

I think Freya is a lovely name. I dont think it is that uncommon, your family may not have heard of it before, but I think there are a few Freyas about.

Technoprisoners · 01/11/2008 16:36

Is also spelled Freja - perhaps more unusual?

stayinbed · 01/11/2008 16:39

i think its awful it doesn't sound like a name. it sounds like the word 'fray' with an 'a' at the end

our good friends have the surname 'Frey' and for years (before i heard the name Freya) i thought this was a very strange sounding name

but my advice is, pay no attention to the relatives or what other people think

Technoprisoners · 01/11/2008 16:42

It does sound like a name. It is a Nordic name, like it or not.
