What determines a name to be "chavvy" where does this come from?

Is it popularity? Class? Celeb?

I am considering a name for my soon to be born DD and on a thread on this here board, saw that it had "chavvy" conotations....what is the basis of a name being "chavvy"?? Is Chavvy another word for common (common as in popular or common as in Vicky Pollard?? Is it not ok to be different as it seems to me that names that are not run of the mill are deemed in this way.....

I'm curious, please humour me!

I do think some names have connetations behind them, and people will make assumptions about them.

However, it is all subjective - what one person finds common and not so nice, another group will like.

And some people will refer to a name as "chav" or "common" simply because they have become popular and well used; even where children were named that before they were as popular.

....I concur that stereotyping social class is always tired, lazy, and indicative of a lack of empathy and imagination. Doubly so when applied to names...

However it is also very funny.

I for one have never allowed my lazy, unimaginative nature to get in the way of a cheap laugh.

....and I offer to purchase and consume any nominated headgear (with or without condiments) should anyone be able to nominate a Konnor, Chardonnay-Storm, or Karley to have taken part in (say) the Henley Regatta....

Our Dd2 has the same name as a minor celebrity's daughter. No one who knows us would possibly think we'd named her after said celeb. If anyone thinks we did, they can't know us, hence their opinion doesn't matter anyway. It's a pretty name and has been around for ages.

If you like the name then use it.

but yes there are some names that no matter how lovely i think they are, i imagine a legging clad woman with a baggy sweatshirt and huge hoop earings shouting it down the street with a fag in hand.

The thing is, if a name is pretty then people will like it. unfortunately us working class folk have access to babay name books to and we also see these pretty nam,es and chose them for our children.

My own rule of thumb is this, if there is a product out that has the same name then think twice about it....so chardonnay/pepsi/carling etc are not wise choices

I scored 18%....what's wrong with calling a settee a settee ffs?? I was always told by my (very middle class) parents to never call it a sofa (or God forbid) a couch.

I started the thread on Tallulah / Eden choice and have decided on Tallulah. It is the loveliest name and although I was momentarily worried about the C connotations when I read the other thread on Tallulah I have since realised that it only seems to be on MN that I have heard these. Most other people i know love the name and had already started calling my bump Tallulah before I had finished making my choice. We love it because it is so pretty and is NOT a common name. As for the chav thing,I am sure there are many more chavs who call there children Ellie, Molly, Olivia etc (I know...I teach some!) and you don't hear people go on about these names. They seem popular with all. It's not the name that determines the child!

The name Tallulah reminds me of the school play "Bugsy Malone", hence why I am not keen on the name.

One of DD's imaginary friends is called Tallulah. We do live in Cheltenham, but are not into designer sportswear, neither do we have any associations with the Ladies' College. I'm not sure if this proves anything - after all, while DD is a middle-class, Boden*-wearing 4yo, I'm not sure that Tallulah is. I don't even know if she's human.
