What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Apollo and Pheonix - rejected as our local school is too rough, would be too cruel.
Ronan - loved the name but made us think of Keating.
Seth and Kane - Emmerdale.

Took us several days after DS was born to find anything me and DP could agree about.

Ezekiel for a boy
Zenobie , Ezriella, Elowen for a girl. All slated by DP

Countingthegreyhairs, I know what you mean about Madeleine. We were strongly considering it and the offspring of the unfortunate Kate and Gerry hadn't even entered our head. Then suddenly it clicked. My boyfriend's surname is McCusker. Madeleine McCusker? Too much, I think. It was struck off the list shortly thereafter.

lolianja · 14/10/2008 15:22

My boyfriend also vetoed Eli, for Emmerdale-related reasons. I have an enormous crush on Eli Dingle, who my boyfriend loathes with a passion, so in honesty I know before I even began annunciating the 'E' that he'd put the clamps down. Still, worth a try. And in my defence I've liked the name long before ED ever appeared on TV.

Angel - but felt I was setting myself up for a fall!

Buckets · 14/10/2008 19:31

Great name by the way Nigel. My DH is a RL Nigel Tuffnell, he has his own 'playroom' full of guitars. And an armadillo in his trousers natch.

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 15/10/2008 17:27

would have loved Myfanwy as it was my nain's name and i only realised when somebody pointed it out a couple of years ago what it could be mistaken as.

singersgirl · 15/10/2008 17:46

Both my DSs' names are on this thread .

I love Rex, but DH vetoed it (too doggy).
I also love Clement; I think Clem is cool for a little boy or a teenager or an adult. DS2 would have been a wonderful Rex and DS1 a great Clem. And strangely enough one of them has a monosyllabic name with a short e in the middle! There's a theme.

Gabriel is lovely too and my nephew's name.

I like Clemency and Claudia for girls, but DH insists on pronouncing Claudia 'Cloudier' in the Italian or German way.

DH's favourite for a girl, which I vetoed, was Charity.

Herbert/bertie... will have to save it for a dog...
harrison...

northernruth · 15/10/2008 20:38

I wanted Tallulah for a girl (veto'ed!) or Ralph for a boy (ditto). Ralph was soundly abused by all friends on a night out in thepub the night before our 20 wk scan.

DH wanted either Vic or Sid for a boy (after Reeves or Vicious) - both veto'd by me!

Good job we had a girl!

dreamygirl · 15/10/2008 21:06

melmamof3 I know several white Naomi's including my goddaughter who's a lovely girl.
I also love the name Lucas! but DH said it was poncey and we have no boys anyway.

I used to know a girl called Aisling and toyed with it for both my DDs as I love the name and it's got a beautiful meaning but I think lots of people wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Would still consider it if I had another girl though!

FunkyChicken · 16/10/2008 04:51

Whats wrong with Francis for a boy then?

We have one and call him Frankie which is cute for a toddler and he can be Frank when he grows big and burley...!

LuLuBai · 16/10/2008 15:43

OK - haven't managed to read all 18 pages of this thread but find that most of my favourite names are on here. But help me out - can anyone explain why you need to be brave to use Julian or Gabriel?

After hours and hours of heated debate, those are the only 2 names DH and I can agree on for a boy (with Julian in top position purely cos it sounds slightly better with our surname) so am concerned that I am missing something. If I have a DS this time will he be teased for eternity? I don't remember any Julians or Gabriels at school being teased...

I admit to being a bit out of touch (someone on MN had to inform me that Milo is a character in the tweenies the other day, which is a shame as I like that too).

cluckyagain · 16/10/2008 15:48

Love lots of these names - have used one of them for dd2!

nimble · 16/10/2008 20:58

I had to use Blaise for my daughter's middle name even though I love it. You can't call someone Blaise in London's east end. Imagine Bianca a la eastenders - Blaiyyyse! urgh!

Buckets · 18/10/2008 19:03

Lulubai, back in the 60s Kenneth Williams used to be part of a radio ndouble act called Julian and Sandy who were camp hairdressers. Think that's where the Julian stigma comes from although it's so long ago pretty sure kids at school wouldn't have a problem with it these days.
My DH would never go for Gabriel because it contains the sound Gay . Before declaring him a homophobe, bear in mind there are 2 versions of the word Gay in current usage, one being the playground concept of any boy who doesn't conform to the 'norm' (eg one who likes girls, eeuw).

Natbrum · 19/10/2008 09:57

I love India to go with middle name Rose, but hubby said it sounded like a hippy selling candles in an indoor market, wearing a skirt made from grass. hmm.
