Boy's name that goes well in German and English

Help!

I'm already a week overdue and still haven't agreed with my partner on a boy's name which goes well with the surname 'Wild' and also doesn't sound too different in German (I'm German and the child will spend some time there as well).

My favourite at the moment is 'Ennis Wild' - unusual but not pretentious, I find. Any opinions on that? Any other suggestions?

Thanks everybody!

Jonathan, Benjamin, Benedict, David, Samuel, Oliver

Think multiple syllables are good with a short surname.

Some good suggestions here already. Like Lucas, Sebastian, Fabian.

emkana · 30/09/2008 22:40

Ooh I loooooooooooooove Benedict!

germansoph · 30/09/2008 22:43

There's quite a few I like, thanks a lot - will start discussion again.

My closest friend is called Matthias, would be a bit weird to call the child the same name - but I agree it's a very nice name...

He'd probably feel flattered

Let us know what you decide on in the end!

germansoph · 30/09/2008 22:45

Benedict? After the pope?

Finn, Otto, Elias?

Sarimillie · 30/09/2008 22:46

Theo?

emkana · 30/09/2008 22:46

I hadn't even thought of the pope tbh.

My friend's son is called Benedict and I think it's a really cool name.

hugeheadofhair · 30/09/2008 22:47

Tobias / Toby ?

germansoph · 30/09/2008 22:48

Shall throw all these at my partner - he doesn't seem to really like any boys' names. Probably secretely wished for a girl...

Yes yes of course TOBIAS! That's another one in the same league as Sebastian/Matthias. Brilliant choice!

And I bet there's another male close to you now who's called that

emkana · 30/09/2008 22:49

boys' names are difficult to be fair.

germansoph · 30/09/2008 22:51

No, just a distant friend in Berlin. I suggested Tobias already - my partner thinks it sounds like a dog. This is what's driving me mad!

Hans
Oliver
Gerd

(Looked up German football team on wiki )

germansoph · 30/09/2008 22:54

Could it be a team from the Seventies? Gerd and Hansi Müller?

DaddyJ · 30/09/2008 22:57

What about Alexander?

Which part of Germany is the name Ennis from?
Never heard it before - man lernt nie aus!

Tinker · 30/09/2008 22:57

It was! Think Hansi and Gerd are great. Uli?

germansoph · 30/09/2008 22:58

Thanks everybody - will carry my big belly with poor unnamed child to bed now. Will check back tomorrow and definitely tell you which name made it in the end.

Thanks everyone, very helpful!!

Ennis I know only from Broke Back Mountain

germansoph · 30/09/2008 23:04

Ennis is actually a gaelic name, meaning island. There are a few Irish and scottish variants. Germans seem to like foreign names, that's probably why I picked it up there. Pronunciation-wise it is the same in both languages which is an advantage compared to names like Michael for example which sounds very different in both languages. But doesn't seem to be received very well here.
Anyway, good night und gute Nacht everyone!

Tobias is tops and is a cute little boy, not a dog. (I'm also half-german)
what about Conrad?

Ennis is nice.

Have had a look at dc's class lists and these are the names which would have the same or nearly the same pronounciation in both languages:

Moritz, Patrik, Marco, Marcus, Thomas, Samuel, Emil, Martin, Robin, Alex, Domenik, Finn, Anton, Lucas

I like Ennis.

germansoph · 01/10/2008 09:36

I really like Kaspar, Moritz, Anton. Great class list! But also still like 'Ennis Wild' a lot. Glad to hear at least some people don't find it so awful.
I'm really worried he will be born and we can only send a text around saying: he's there - can't agree on a name. Please wait another month. I wonder how often that happens to people. My partner who doesn't like anything hopes that the moment he'll see the boy he will KNOW his name. Hmmm - how realistic is that???
