WDYT?

Is it a bit 'east end cockney' or is it cool and different?

My step sister (only recently acquired) is calling her baby boy Stanley and she is a complete chav.

TheWoodWithinTheWall · 30/09/2008 21:01

.. and, it's a surname as a first name which is never good.

preggersplayspop · 30/09/2008 21:08

I really like it, normally I'm not over keen on shortened names but Stan I love. None round here either.

Bucharest · 30/09/2008 21:10

Stanley still wears a flat cap and breeds whippets. (I can see the cutesy factor, sort of)

Woollymummy · 30/09/2008 21:28

i know a little one, he is cute, it will bear the test of time. way more cool to have a dustman's name and be a toff, or a dustman, than be called a uber-posh name and not be able to blend in, esp at school.

yelnats · 05/10/2008 00:23

my dp and dd's surname. not keen at all for a first name.

SuperBunny · 05/10/2008 00:25

It's lovely

Was my Grandad's name (sort of), I'd use it

Mammina · 05/10/2008 09:31

I think it's cute

twosofar · 05/10/2008 09:54

WoodWithinTheWall, it's not a surname used as first name. If that's your argument do you think everyone who calls their son James or Thomas or Martin for example is committing the heinous crime of using a surname as a first name. I think you may have your wires crossed!

mell242 · 06/10/2008 12:45

We're calling our little one Stanley (he's due in 5 days!!!)

Was the only name me and my husband could agree on for a boy. I love it, think it's cute and cool. I don't know any other Stanley's either. I've had a mixed reaction to the name, I really don't mind though. It's not exactly a 'way out there celebrity style name', I think people are just honestly suprised that we are choosing such an 'old fashioned name'.

tartetatin · 06/10/2008 19:18

I have a Stanley; he is just over two years old, as cute as a button and the name really suits him. You will get a mixed reaction though, however, once people get used to it they do tend to love it.. go for it; it isn't chavvy, it isn't posh, it isn't being overused, it isn't one of those horrible American type names (like Ethan) it is a good solid English name. You can tell I'm sold on it!

pamelat · 06/10/2008 19:22

"Stan the man". I really like it.

Its a little over used around here, but less so than Archie/Alfie etc

angrypixie · 06/10/2008 19:26

Gorgeous - He's just going to be a poppet!

PussinJimmyWhoooos · 06/10/2008 19:27

We know a couple that just had a Stanley and I've yet to meet people that don't snigger when they hear it...

But...each their own I say!

LaDiDaDi · 06/10/2008 20:45

I like it. Much prefer it to Ronnie/Reggie/Bobby.

Ineedsomesleep · 06/10/2008 20:49

Are you from Stoke?

Beachcomber · 06/10/2008 21:20

My godson is called Stanley.

His parents are like most people where they don't really fit into a category.

They liked it and felt it was right for them/their family.

cockles · 06/10/2008 21:23

Am getting used to it as it's trendy now but don't like those show-off retro-cockney names. Hate Stan (dustman?) Can't imagine it on a 15 year old.

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 06/10/2008 21:25

I have a Stanley, he's 60 and my dad.

Also had a Grandfather and great grandfather.

mslucy · 12/10/2008 18:17

I'm 23 weeks pg and our new one has been Stanley since we found out he was a boy.

Absolutely love it.
Works perfectly with our surname - will be shortened to "Stan the Man".

Heard someone shouting for a Stanley on Hampstead Heath yesterday.

Obv v.popular with North London ponces like ourselves.

Other ds is Angus and I think the names go together well.

Used to love Archie, but that is WAY too popular these days.

lottiejenkins · 14/10/2008 10:42

Nigel Planers oldest son is called Stanley..............

mslucy · 15/10/2008 18:07

So Stanley is the official choice for posh media ponces

2Helenback · 17/10/2008 20:34

Love Stanley, but witch at work is due 2 months before me and has already bagged it as she knows the sex of hers.

Living in north midlands, everyone would assume it was a football thing after Stanley Matthews, and I loathe football, so maybe not so bad after all.

Sharonmary · 12/09/2010 20:45

We just named are new born Stanley and we couldn't have chose a better name. We dont no any more baby stan's (we live in Yorkshire) and found its a 'marmite' name love or hate!

NormanNorris · 12/09/2010 21:22

Sorry, I don't like it. It's not at all posh (well the ones I have met certainly are not!). I do find it a bit Alfie/Archie/Ronnie/Reggie/Ernie/Sidney etc etc
