No. Ruled out several names I liked as it was the name of someone famous.

Chequers · 28/09/2008 11:42

Yes.

colacubes · 28/09/2008 11:42

Why not Jamie Oliver isnt gonna be around for ever, and james doesnt have to equal Jamie, my dp is James and I have never called him jamie and neither has anyone else.

Jimmy is cool though if you wanna shorten it go for Jimmy.

notsoteenagemum · 28/09/2008 11:46

I probably would but DH said no to Charlie George as DS's first and second names because of some decrepid old footballer. Be prepared for comments though DS is called Alfie and for the first year I got constantly asked if I liked eastenders or if I was a fan of Jude Law.

VictorianSqualor · 28/09/2008 11:48

Yes.
DP's brother is called Oliver Stone and Oliver Stone is a lot better known than Jamie Oliver.

It's not like children will think 'oh James Oliver, Jamie Oliver, the tv chef' so Your ds would always be the person the first thought of as James Oliver and by the time they did think it it wouldn't be important because your child would have already made the name his own.

Hulababy · 28/09/2008 11:53

Yes it is was the name I really wanted.

misdee · 28/09/2008 12:00

yes.

dd3 is Serena Williams.

HeinzSight · 28/09/2008 12:03

Yes, my DS2 is a James and I never think of him as a Jamie. Different names IMO

frazzledoldbag34 · 28/09/2008 14:06

I probably wouldn't. But that's because I don't like Jamie Oliver at all and it would make me think of him.
But James is a lovely name, on the other hand.

pigleychez · 28/09/2008 15:04

Yeah That sounds a nice name.

I agree that in a few years time Jamie Oliver will prob be out of the limelight and by the time he goes to school his peers will have no idea who he is.

on the James/Jamie thing.. my DH is a Jamie and people always think his "real" name is James but its actually Jamie.

Personally I dont see how James can become Jamie?? Not as if its even a shortened version of it. They are completely different names

sorry for the rant!- its a bug bear of mine.

cheesesarnie · 28/09/2008 15:06

took me ages to work out why you wouldnt!i get it now!
yes i would.i have a sweet baby james(7 so not really baby but...).he gets called jamesy or j never jamie.

james is a lovely lovely name!

Bella73 · 28/09/2008 15:06

Um, I think that Jamie is a shortened version (nickname for) James.

We're Olivers and we ruled out "Jamie" but didn't want "James" anyway (though it did take me pointing it out to dp before he realised why I was saying no to Jamie).

lolianja · 28/09/2008 16:08

@pigleychez - Jamie is a very standard shortened form for James. It started out that way and has only become a name in its own right recently.

I don't think it matters, I've know plenty of people with the same name as celebrities and they've only ever got grief for it in jest. I doubt a single one of them would say that they actually dislike it.

As mentioned above, he might not even become a Jamie. Might just stay a James, or go for Jim or Jimmy, which I prefer.

GobbledigookisThrifty · 28/09/2008 16:19

It wouldn't bother me.

Two of my sons have famous names!

Agree with others - James doesn't have to be shortened to Jamie either. I know some that are and some that are NEVER called Jamie.

GobbledigookisThrifty · 28/09/2008 16:21

In fact I know a few children that have 'famous' names.

GobbledigookisThrifty · 28/09/2008 16:21

If you've got a 'common' surname it can really restrict your choices otherwise!

FabioVicePeeperPlopper · 28/09/2008 16:21

Yes but I wouldn't call him Oliver or Gulliver.

sadminster · 28/09/2008 16:23

no, the association is too strong.

GobbledigookisThrifty · 28/09/2008 17:26

I don't think James Oliver is that strong a connection - Jamie Oliver, yes, but not James.

Charlee · 28/09/2008 17:28

I would call my baby James and even Jamie if my surmname was Oliver, i like both names so sod it if there is a celeb of the ame name.

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 29/09/2008 07:39

Thanks for opinions everyone.

It seems most think it'd be OK. Not sure if James is 'the one' but it is deffo a strong runner.

It would be fine to use James. DS is James and has never been called Jamie. I love the name and am so glad I used it.
