one syllable first name and surname

my mum is annoying me - we have a one syllable surname so she's saying we have to have baby's name as two or more syllables - I get what she's saying but two of our top boys' names are one syllable as is one of our top girls' names and to be honest so long as it doesn't sound really weird, does it matter that much?? (will be having middle name, both of which are 3 syllable)

I just argued it's not like you get called your full name out loud very often and surely it's more preferable to choose names you like?

AIBU?

u go with what you like - its your baby - your choice

pleasechange · 23/09/2008 13:18

Personally I chose a name with more than 1 syllable to go with our surname for that reason

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2008 13:19

Both of my DCs have 1 syllable surnames (different as been married twice) DDs 1st name is 3 syllables as I think as a little girl it needs softening but DS is Max Brown and it is butch and macho.

So I would go with 1 syllable boys names but softer longer girls names.

Overmydeadbody · 23/09/2008 13:19

No it doesn't matte that much. Go with what you like. I can think of quite a few famous names that are one syllable for first and surname. I don't think it matters at the end of the day.

lalaa · 23/09/2008 13:23

You use your full name every time you introduce yourself to someone and every time you are introduced by someone else. I spend a lot of time introducing myself (in a professional sense) and although I don't have two single syllable names, I have a first name that ends in a vowel and a surname that starts with one and I have carefully annunciate (sp?) my name every time I say it! My point is that it is important how your name sounds when you say it in full.

Also, my Mum has a single syllable first name and surname and she doesn't like it.

I don't think YABU, but I do see where your Mum is coming from.

Madame Castafiore - I love your DS's name! Sounds like a superhero in one of those kids cartoon type programmes !

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2008 13:26

Ha ha - he wants to be called Tommy Zoom though - that is a cool name - or Ben Ten!

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2008 13:27

Oh and my first and second name are 1 syllable and I feckin hate it soooo bloody boring.

tokentotty · 23/09/2008 13:27

Yes, but Max Brown is like Ben Ten isn't it ? Sounds really cool. Shame about the desire to be Tommy Zoom though... Not sure that sounds quite as good

tokentotty · 23/09/2008 13:29

Oh, sorry OP, I was going to post that my husband feels exactly the same way about first names to go with our single syllable surname. I went with it for DS1 who's called Patrick but think we might break it for the one I'm expecting.

docket · 23/09/2008 13:35

I have a one syllable surname and went for more than one names for that reason. But you should do as you please!

NobodysPerfect · 23/09/2008 13:40

I had a one syllable first name and surname - oh I was about to say until I married, but I've just realised that my married name is one syllable too!

I think it sounds strong and hasn't done me any harm. Two of our three dc's have one syllable first names too.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 23/09/2008 16:29

i do totally understand where she's coming from - but then I very very rarely introduce myself or others with both names, I use their first name

hmmmm....well I can understand because my husband's name is weird with one syllable but that's cos his first name ends with L and our surname begins with L so it does sound weird...our surname is Loy so quite soft sounding and the first names we've chosen with 1 syllable are pretty strong

Nate Loy
Jake Loy
Kate Loy

do they sound weird?

DrNortherner · 23/09/2008 16:32

I don't think they sound weird at all.

Does Brad Pitt/Tom Jones/Bruce Lee sound weird?! Not at all.

I think your surname is nice. It's not a boring name either. Do what you want, ignore your mum!

dinkymum · 23/09/2008 21:27

Me and my friend was having this discussion the other day as her baby will have a one syllable surname and we came to the conclusion that for a boy/ man one syllable is fine and can be quite manly (hasn't done Brad Pitt any harm!) but for girl/woman maybe not. (my maiden name is one syllable and my first name is usually always shortened to one and I was never keen on the combination.

MrsJamesMartin · 23/09/2008 21:31

My ds has one syllable first and surname, my mum had a similar opinion but couldn't call him anything else now.

fishie · 23/09/2008 21:32

my name has two syllables and only two mouth movements. it is very hard to say, difficult to explain over phone and a bit of a pest. it also makes one first name when run together.

never mind, it is my name and my parents chose it. i didn't take husband's surname, that person isn't me.

sweetkitty · 23/09/2008 21:43

We have a one syllable surname and with our accent it sounds very hard for this reason all the DDs have 3 syllable names although DD1's is shortened to 2. I just think they flow a lot better.

pointydog · 23/09/2008 21:43

I think one syllable for each sounds absolutely fine. I quite like it in fact

I think all your options are good actually and don't sound odd at all.

However if you wanted you have chosen names which could all be registered as their longer form then shortened fby everyone for as long as your dc wanted, possibly forever.

So

Katherine/Katie Loy
Jacob Loy
Nathan/Nathaniel Loy

SilkCutMama · 23/09/2008 21:58
