Help with French/English boys name - Quentin, Hugo or Thomas

My dh (French) and I are expecting our first boy. We would like to give him a name that 'works' in both French and English. Our favorites, all fairly popular in France, are:

Quentin
Hugo
Thomas

What do you think?

I live in France and never met nor heard of a Quentin, child or adult.

Anna8888 · 23/09/2008 17:24

My sister's sons (DH French) are Hugo and Thomas. Hugo is wildly popular in France, as is Thomas (which is also more traditional).

I don't like Quentin in either language.

castille · 23/09/2008 17:29

Agree Quentin doesn't work in UK.

My French 2yo nephew is called Quentin and it was secretly sniggered at when I told my UK friends and family, I'm afraid.

Thomas and Hugo are great. Both were on our list when DS was born (we are a Franco-British family too). We chose Thomas, but there is still the issue of whether or not to pronounce the S!

What abour Edouard (is that how it is spelt in French?) or Fabrice? Or Charles - that's a French/English name.

Or Thierry? - English people are familiar with that name now thanks to Thierry Henry.

I do like Hugo though if you're set on one of the three.

Themasterandmargaritas · 23/09/2008 17:34

I know a French Paul, nice or not nice? Personally I quite like it.

Anna8888 · 23/09/2008 17:46

LOL at Thierry. It's very middle-aged and unfashionable.

And my DP's name - he hates it.

georgimama · 23/09/2008 17:47

Oh well that's me told by the fount of all knowledge about France, I'll just pop off and buy some gladiator sandals or something much more now.

Carmenere · 23/09/2008 17:47

Hercule

HeadFairy · 23/09/2008 17:49

How about Luc?

Anna8888 · 23/09/2008 17:49

Paul is fine, if you like it (I only quite like it) - not particularly different socially/aesthetically/historically in English and French, which is good.

William is sweet in French.

Anna8888 · 23/09/2008 17:50

Luc a bit downmarket I think.

Anna8888 · 23/09/2008 17:50

Gilles is nice I think.

ChippyMinton · 23/09/2008 17:53

Clement or Christian?

How is Quentin pronounced in French?

Themasterandmargaritas · 23/09/2008 17:58

Ok so how about Leo, or Sam even. I know both in a bilingual family.

noonki · 23/09/2008 18:03

quentin and Hugo are imo 'nice but dim' names, (probably coz of hugo from the vicar of dibely)

I love thomas, I know an adult xavier and a pascal and think they are ace names

anamaria22 · 23/09/2008 18:44

I like Quentin - but then I am biased as its my ds's name .

EachPeachPearMum · 23/09/2008 20:57

We are in similar circumstances- though we currently live in UK.
Am LOLing at Anna and Thierry- My MIL keeps suggesting it! DH just says 'yes Mum' and moves on

When we had DD the only boys' name we had was Etienne.
This time we are having a boy, but still no real 'list'

What about Theo? works in both
Emile
Maxim
Yannick/Yannis
Charles

I do love Pascal, but DH is very much against it, and keeps saying- 'No- Blaise Pascal was insane!'

EachPeachPearMum · 23/09/2008 20:58

Oh and Lucien

Ellbell · 23/09/2008 21:02

I like Didier. No idea if it's trendy or naff in France, but I have always liked it.

Of your three I like Hugo and Thomas but am not keen on Quentin in either language.

castille · 23/09/2008 21:02

Quentin in French = Kon-tan, more or less

Anna8888 · 23/09/2008 21:05

Charles is a good one.
