Need a name to go with Roan...

We're having another DS in 5 weeks time and just can't decide on another name. We'd quite like something on a celtic theme, and would like it to be similar in popularity to Roan, i.e fairly unusual. Our list includes these:

Ewan - too similar to Roan?
Adam - not unusual enough?
Cameron
Oscar
Donovan - not sure about Don, Donnie

I'd love to hear your thoughts on these, and any other suggestions you might have! Please be honest!

Bryn
Hwyell
Aidan
Finnegan
Devlin
Idris
Cormac

Thanks, some nice ideas there but the ones I like best won't go with our really awkward surname!

Adam is the nicest name out of the selection, but it is popular so won't meet your needs.

I've never heard of Ewan. How about Edwin? Looks similar.

Flier · 22/09/2008 18:02

without postimg your surname its rather difficult to suggest any more, if its that unusual you probably won't want to

Romney · 22/09/2008 19:14

How can you have never heard of Ewan?! Not even Ewan McGregor? I am incredulous. Though everything is possible.

dizzydixies · 22/09/2008 20:09

I love Tadgh - think it would be great with Roan

Ineedsomesleep · 22/09/2008 20:16

If you are worried that Adam is too popular then I would cross Oscar off your list as well.

Toopy · 22/09/2008 20:21

Dizzy - how do you pronounce Tadgh?

minkersmum · 22/09/2008 20:29

think euan goes well with roan, also like kern too (means little dark one if i remember right). Considered both for my son but went for fergus in the end.

AnarchyAunt · 22/09/2008 20:30

Tadgh - 'Tige'

Twelvelegs · 22/09/2008 20:31

Hector... I love that name.
Angus

dizzydixies · 22/09/2008 20:36

here you go

tadgh

saggyhairyarse · 22/09/2008 20:56

I immediately tought Osian (O-shan).

BlueChampagne · 22/09/2008 21:56

Feargal/Fergus
Dougal/Douglas
Lewis (probably a bit popular now too)
Harris
Murray
Rory
Donald
Callum/Colm
Stuart/Stewart
Neil/Niall

Think we do need to know more about the surname ...

Perpendicular · 22/09/2008 22:42

Fionn?

Toopy · 23/09/2008 00:39

Well I suppose my surname isn't that unusual, it just rules out a lot of names - anything with an 's' or 'ley' ending for example. Thanks for all the suggestions though, there are some there I hadn't thought of, and I'm glad to hear that minkersmum thinks Euan/Ewan is ok as I think it's my favourite!

S1ur · 23/09/2008 00:42

I think it depends on surname. how many syllables?

Toopy · 23/09/2008 02:10

Surname is short, need at least 2 syllables

I always end up coming into these threads and suggesting ... Brodie - a friend has a ds called this and I love it.

Also

Domhnall (Gaelic Donald, pronounced Do-all),
Seamus
Aidan (my ds)
Lorn
Cahal
Brendan
Patrick
Colm
Finn

Hope you find something you like!

Hamish
Kenzie

blueshoes · 23/09/2008 11:37

Love the name Roan.

How about Kye? Sorry I am not completely on top of Celtic names so it might be a stange suggestion.

blueshoes · 23/09/2008 11:38

oh, you want 2 syllables ...
