loving xanthe as a first name. what goes well as a middle name. i like eve and do think we need a one syllable name to go with our surnane (2 syllable).

Surname starts with E.

Now considering Anya as a first name too?

Any thoughts?

Prefer Anna

thumbwitch · 21/09/2008 23:55

I like Anya but if you want to stick with your pretentious theme you could have Annabella or Anastasia and never mind the middle name? Or perhaps Alexa?

Megglevache · 21/09/2008 23:55

I agree it is poncetastic and lovely.

I am not so keen on Anya myself, it just sounds like someone has forgotten the T to me.

thumbwitch · 21/09/2008 23:56

I really like Alethea too

thumbwitch · 21/09/2008 23:56

Have you considered Iolanthe?

minkersmum · 22/09/2008 00:07

thumbwitch yes i have but had no bloody idea how to pronounce it and was given various answers. How do you pronounce it.

Iolanthe is how we came to Xanthe!

Oh Alethea is very pretty. Love Thea too.

thumbwitch · 22/09/2008 00:10

eye-oh-lan-thee, soft th in thee, like a lisp, not hard like in the.
I prefer it to Xanthe, tbh

Plonker · 22/09/2008 00:11

Just said Alethea out loud and it sounds as though i'm saying Alicia with a lisp

As you were ...

thumbwitch · 22/09/2008 00:17

no no no!!! That's what happened with friends of mine who named their daughter Alethea but pronounced it as you have just said - the emphasis is on the "thee":
Al-a-THEE-ah
then it doesn't sound anything like Alicia, lisp or no. (friends changed it to Alicia exactly because of that )

minkersmum · 22/09/2008 00:18

Mmm finding eye-oh-lan-thee hard to get my tongue around altho i do like it, dd1 is Iris so bit of a flower theme there!!

I had problems getting my mum to get to grips with Xanthe, wonder how she'd get on with eye-oh-lan-thee, oof its maybe a bit much for me, i shout alot and trying to get my tongue round that in a hurry maybe difficult!!

Thea was a big fav of mine but dp has friend who named his wee one Thea so he says we can't have one.

Ahhh i see ...

'tis a very pretty name

minkersmum · 22/09/2008 00:23

Actually i really like Thea, think i may badger dp about it again. His friend lives 500 miles from us and we've only seen them once in past 2 years, whats the big deal??

I know it maybe uncomfortable letting them know but well.. they don't own the name!!

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 22/09/2008 00:26

yes, I still call friends' daughter Thea (as does friend's sister) cos we got used to it before they changed it to Alicia - she (Thea) likes it, but only from certain people. Others she likes to call her Alicia - but do you know, she really is a Thea, Alicia is just too grown up a name for her!!

thumbwitch · 22/09/2008 00:28

Minkersmum - if you call yours Alethea that isn't the same as calling her Thea, tell your DP (and if 500miles away then sheer lunacy to care! )

minkersmum · 22/09/2008 00:34

Have considered names like Dorothea etc to get thea but really only love Thea, just plain and simple Thea.

Xanthe is nice. Great initial too - not many X's around. I don't think Eve works as a second name unless the surname rounds it off nicely. Xanthe Joy is lovely.

Megglevache · 22/09/2008 16:28

Ooh Lola sounds nice with Iris.
