I keep hearing birth announcements for Islas. It was on my list but I fear it will become uber popular. What do you think?

It does seem to be very trendy at the moment. I know two new babies called Isla born in the last 6 months. However, if you love it, then use it. It will not be trendy for too long, you might regret not using it if you love it.

Yes. Isla, Ava, Isabella.

VictorianSqualor · 19/09/2008 14:37

Ella wasn't very popular at all when I named DD (8years ago) but everyone seems to know an Ella or Ellie now, there are only two in DD's school though so Isla won't necessarily be huge just more heard of iyswim.

I don't know any Islas.

LaDiDaDi · 19/09/2008 14:42

Sometimes it's difficult to tell if a name that was just very unusual before is now just a bit more popular (doesn't make you think "Ooh that's different") when you hear it or if it's going to end up top of the charts.

If you love it then use it.

Whatever happened to Isla St Claire off of the Generation Game?

BellaBear · 19/09/2008 14:44

I'm an Ella, hardly knew any growing up, now I hear my name everywhere! On the plus side, I can now buy a mug/pencil/useless tat with my name on it, never could as a child.

cafebistro · 19/09/2008 14:48

My dd is Isla. Im not too concerned about it becoming more popular. We chose it cause we liked it and theres not much you can do if other people want to use the name too! To be honest most people ive met havent heard the name before and ask how its spelt, where it originates from etc. If you like the name ,use it.

cafebistro · 19/09/2008 14:51

LOL Puppymonkey...thats what my dad said when I told him the name we'd chosen. I said "you know like isla fisher...borats wife!" ha ha.

sb6699 · 19/09/2008 17:00

My dd (4) is Isla. Didn't know any when I named her but all of a sudden there seem to loads of babies with her name.

My dh reckons is something to do with Frank Lampard naming his daugher Isla.

nickeldime · 20/09/2008 13:49

Isla is not too popular yet, in comparison to Ella. I would prefer Ella as it's traditional and trendy as well:

Zillions of Ellas round here but I haven't met an Isla yet.

minkersmum · 21/09/2008 22:15

I know alot of Ellas but also a fair few Islas.

Isla far nicer imo, Much softer name, i think Ella quite a strong name.

Both pretty, depends what you're looking for.

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2008 21:15

LOL - A toddler Isla I know has just got a baby sister Ella!

ja9ladiesdancing · 10/12/2008 21:20

You guys in Scotland?

nkf · 10/12/2008 21:22

I don't know any Islas but probably know about two dozen Ellies.

SilkStockings · 10/12/2008 21:23

Puppy Monkey - she's busy recording folk albums.

oh darn - was our probable name for a girl but don't wnat anything too popular. Alas, its about the only name DH and I can agree on (so it may well be Isla for a boy as well - at least that would be different !).

It is definitely moving up in the national gov. statistics and we just have time to see what happened this year.

Ewe · 10/12/2008 21:29

Have two in my daughters nursery so from a reasonably small sample I would say yes it is getting a bit more popular but I think it is one of those names where there are hotspots of popularity IYKWIM?

maretta · 10/12/2008 21:39

This is Office of National Statistics names for the last five years www.statistics.gov.uk/specials/babiesnames_girls.asp.

Isla is number 70 for 2007, so not that popular, although I think only 94th place in 2006.
