Being too harsh on people suggesting unusual names???

Why is it on here that people think it's perfectly fine to call babies commonly used names but jump up and down in horror at suggestions for something different? (and I'm guilty of this as well).
Would life not be a bit more interesting if school classrooms had a selection of kids called Marmaduke, Zazie, Juniper, Wilfred, Tallulah and Astrid? More interesting and less confusing than a class of 20 containing 3 Ruby's, 2 Olivia's, 3 Emily's, 2 Harry's, 3 Daniel's and 3 Thomas's. If you see what I mean. Why are we so mean to people who fancy something a bit 'different'.........?
Surely variety is the spice of life?

I think people should say what they think

I have read remarks that show that people think my children's names are hideous, crusty, middle-aged!! I do not mind. I knew that a lot of people would think this before I named them. But at least it didn't come as a shock to me after I'd named them.

If you ask the question, expect an answer. And if you are 100% sure of your own taste and 100% trust your own judgement, well, you're a better namer than say, Nicole Kidman, whose taste may be different to my own, but even allowing for that, she still could have done with a little help to avoid choosing a name that sounds like Sunday Roast.

We can all use a few opinions. Take some on board, laugh at some, ignore some....

I think we all have our own filter. I weeded out the opinions of posters whose children were called names I hated for example. I valued the opinions of posters who were considering names I liked a lot.

Just do that! Don't get all upset about 'nasty' people!

I started a thread about a name I willbe calling my child... Oslo, I love it but I wanted to see how it would be recieved. It maes no difference to whether or not I name him this, I was just curious.

Janni · 17/09/2008 20:21

I disagree with the maxim 'variety is the spice of life', where certain children's names are concerned.

I believe that we, the curmudgeonly stalwarts of the baby names thread, are providing a unique and valuable service to vulnerable, unborn, sometimes even yet-to-be conceived babies, by shouting 'NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!' at regular intervals.

if you post requesting opinion on bilious or hallux vagus, and get derision then tough titty

post a top 100 name and someone'll rock along saying oh i hate that in my class there are too may of them

well shouldn't have asked!not mean but frankly might as well ask the postie or the woman in asda as ask a bunch of strangers with PC

name threaed usually always end in tears and humphy faces

"i like labia minora such a feminine name"

i hate Labia minora so chavvy

Oi that is my dd name

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 17/09/2008 20:28

Oslo is a very interesting choice. It incorporates two trends. A posh trend and a naff trend. Jago, Milo etc, names ending in 'o' and place names, Dakota, Camden, Brooklyn.

But I like it. It will date like fcuk, but right now i like it.

I'm with Hatrick on that one I'm afraid. I think that's just a bit mean.
But then Hatrick and I both have daughters with the same name. Fabulous taste obviously.

I don't know, I just get exasperated I think when people show no imagination. Or maybe I mean a lack of open-mindedness. As if anything other than a top 50 name is 'ridiculous' and 'cruel'. (although I do admit there is a line and sometimes it does have to be drawn. See above comments re: Fish and Chips etc)
But I know I'm guilty of sometimes posting a knee-jerk response of 'Oh no please don't' in reaction to an unusual name but then after thinking it over for a while it grows on me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does that.............the other day I said 'oh no' or similar to Monty and now it's on my list for impending DC3!!!!!!

I am glad that I am happy enough with my (unusual) name choices that I don't need to ask for opinions on here. I know some people including members of my family don't like DS2's name, but I don't care as it suits him.

I think taking the piss out of seriously ludicrous names is fair enough.

I mean what do you think of Bear? This was a serious suggestion. As was Alias (apparently).

dizzydixies · 17/09/2008 22:20

I love the babynames section but if I don't like a name am more likely to say its not to my taste and give some alternative suggestions

am fully aware not everyone will like the names I suggest or even the ones I gave to my girls

according to MN I've given dd1 a name thats now too common, dd2 a name thats too chavvy and dd3 a boys name

we love them lol

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/09/2008 22:23

I did say a line had to be drawn.
I just didn't say where, and by whom
I think given the choice Bear is definitely less ludicrous than Alias although do suspect Alias is a p*ss-take. At lease I hope so!
I can imagine Bear being used by a certain type of person. It's not that bad. Other people are called Tiger FFS!

That bloke off the telly is called Bare Girls or something, isn't he?

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/09/2008 22:31

Bear Grylls I think. TV presenter and explorer. Quite 'gung - ho' - the sort of person to which I was referring.

OP posts:
frazzledoldbag34 · 17/09/2008 22:32

Actually, you know, Bear is really growing on me.

Will add it to my list for DC3
