A cautionary name tale...

I met some people today with small children (hope she isn't a MN-er) and wanted to share this cautionary tale.

Greeted oldest child - what's yr name? I'm Alex, he says. Very nice.

What's yr sister called?
Mum: Oh, this is Minka.

Me: Eh? Sorry what did you say her name was?

Mum: Minka.

Me: Oh that's nice, how unusual, errm what a pretty skirt!

It was Minka, I checked later, not Minca or Mincker or Mincer or Minger. {sorry}

But really, I just wanted to say that that is that child's destiny for the rest of her life, to repeat her name to everyone she tells it to.

So when you name your lovely baby, pick something less commonly used if you want (yes I did) but please pick something that people actually recognise as a name!

FairLadyRantALot · 14/09/2008 11:20

zippitippitoes · 14/09/2008 11:22

It's not the same as I'm going to name this baby blah, when it's ther name it's about a child.

CrushWithEyeliner · 14/09/2008 11:28

you sound vile - a "cautionary" tale, how so?

I think you need to get out a bit more

nailpolish · 14/09/2008 11:29

MINK is scottish slang for chav or tramp

FairLadyRantALot · 14/09/2008 11:32

bumbling · 14/09/2008 11:33

This thread is eerily reminiscent of yesterday's lunchbox snooping affair. I'm feeling very cynical ...

Clary · 14/09/2008 12:22

Oh dear, sorry all.

wans't meaning to be mean. I have come across lots of names and am always very nice but I was a bit taken aback by this one.

I guess I was just alerting some of the baby-namers here who pick rather erm unusual names that their child would have to spell it/repeat it always - and that that might be annoying - and that maybe they should think again before naming their child some of the names I have seen posted here.

Sorry. I was of course perfectly nice to the child and the mum. Thought maybe MN was a place you could come and chat about stuff anonymously without being vile.

And btw I didn't call anybody "stupid" blu - not the name nor the child nor the parent thanks.

Acknowledged....you didn't call the name, or any names, stupid. I know you wouldn't have actually said anything like that, either....but I still think there wouldn't b a problem if people managed not to be even mildly taken aback - which is something even a small child will register.

Anyway....it's a common common theme on MN, clearly not a 'Clary-ism' - and I think my frustration was partly general, not just at you.

Tortington · 15/09/2008 09:09

v. close to MINKY IMO, minky colloquial for womens genitalia

i thank you.

i think that the op has a point.

i think the parents want people to say "waht" oh erm how nice!

when you can't exactyly say !"waht the fuck

MadamAnt · 15/09/2008 09:15

Custy my Granny's jack russel was called Minky. I've stroked my Granny's Minky (nervously as it was a snappy little growler).

FairLadyRantALot · 15/09/2008 09:43

never heard Minky used in relation to womens genitalia?

MannyMoeAndJack · 15/09/2008 10:07

You have just shown your ignorance by starting this thread - anyone remember Celebrity Big Brother and certain housemates' refusal/inability to learn Shilpa's name?

You are no different. You need to open your mind.

thumbwitch · 15/09/2008 22:28

Bit harsh, MM&J.
