No, don´t do it, please

Megglevache · 09/09/2008 14:17

Madam my kids have poncey names but they are easy enough to get around if they end up being wimpy with little specs and bits of string legs

Minniethemoocher · 09/09/2008 14:17

No, it reminds me of Thunderbirds. Sorry....

MamaG · 09/09/2008 14:17

meggle - oh, right! Sorry, yes the baby is fine and wriggly thank you

MadamAnt · 09/09/2008 14:19

All names have the potential for bullying, but IMHO Virgil demands it!

nice

I suppose I should just accept the inevitability that my DCs will be bullied for all sorts of things.

PortBlacksandResident · 09/09/2008 14:20

I think it's FAB

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/09/2008 14:21

would a Virginia get teased then ?

belgo · 09/09/2008 14:21

probably MAS.

MadamAnt · 09/09/2008 14:23

What's so awful about being a virgin anyway, particularly when you're 8 (guessing that that's about the age level for this type of "humour")??

nooka · 09/09/2008 14:34

Virgil the virgin didn't immediately spring to my mind, but I do think it is not at all a nice name. Sorry!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 09/09/2008 17:42

For me the most immediate associations were with Latin poetry and Thunderbirds. I wouldn't have thought of Virgil the Virgin and agree that almost any name (or bodily characteristic) has the potential for teasing if a child is inclined to be a tease or bully.

For me, the name is on the borderline between interesting and unusual and poncetastic and pretentious. I think much depends on your neighbourhood. If you really like the name and there are likely to be several Ptolemys and Clytemnestras in the class, then go for it!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 09/09/2008 17:42

Whoops there go my italics.

ajm200 · 09/09/2008 17:44

There's no problem with being a virgin at any age but that sort of nickname could be torture for a shy, quiet, 15-16 year old boy who is desperate to fit in. to 'impress' the girls..

The shy ones are usually the ones that get tormented by the loud, less studious, kids.

Boys make the comment, all the teenage girls snigger because anything to do with sexuality seems to make teenage girls giggle.. boy goes red.. more ammo for the loud mouths

LynetteScavo · 09/09/2008 17:45

NO!

Dottoressa · 09/09/2008 17:54

I like Virgil, but would probably give it a miss, despite having given my own DCs relatively poncey names. What about Emmanuel (Manu) or Dante? I like both of those, and a Dante can always call himself Dan and claim that he's Daniel!!

Hulababy · 09/09/2008 18:43

I don't like it, sorry.

MrsMattie · 09/09/2008 18:44

Oh it's awful, sorry. I am shuddering just thinking of it.

OneLieIn · 09/09/2008 18:44

NO! Can you imagine how many seconds it would take kids in his class to call him Virgin??

expatinscotland · 09/09/2008 18:44

great name!

for a guinea pig

grouchyoscar · 09/09/2008 19:22

Well it's DH's idea and it has grown on me over time TBH

He wouldn't be called Virgil, just named Virgil. In honour of DH's hero he would be known as Gus

OP posts:
Dottoressa · 09/09/2008 19:50

Now, I love Gus. If I had another DS, he would be Gus without a doubt. If he's not going to be known as Virgil, go for it!!

indiechick · 09/09/2008 20:00

Mr Grissom is Virgil? I've gone right off him now.
There was one in Memphis Belle also.
Probably not helping much here am I, I'll go to another thread.

Dottoressa · 09/09/2008 20:21

I'm probably revealing myself as a literary ignoramus here, but who's Mr Grissom?

pointydog · 09/09/2008 20:25

Yes it is an excellent name

LilRedWG · 09/09/2008 20:29

Gis is lovely! I really like Gus.

MadamAnt - I think MamaG sums up what I was trying to say with her post of Tue 09-Sep-08 14:16:41

"of course we would MadamAnt, don't be silly - none of us are condoning bullying in any way, we are just saying that if you can avoid making your child a target for bullies, then you probably should!"

I am not saying bullying is okay, I'm just saying, why set a child up for it?
