Magnus or Barnaby?

Not due for a long while but at present my fav. is Barnaby and my partner's is Magnus.
Magnus is not a name I would usually go for as I tend to lean towards softer sounding names, but for him to suggest anything is a miracle. Which name do Mumsnetters prefer?

Magnus I think

LouMacca · 05/09/2008 09:54

Sorry, don't like either name at all.

I know its personal taste but there so many lovely boys names to choose from.

Wouldn't want to hurt your feelings but you did ask.

tortoiseshell · 05/09/2008 09:56

Magnus is a lovely name! Really cute for a baby, but has gravitas for an adult!!!

TwoWindyDays · 05/09/2008 10:13

Magnus, great name!

bythepowerofgreyskull · 05/09/2008 10:13

I love barnaby

Cies · 05/09/2008 10:20

I have to say I don't like either.

Magnus is hard. And Barnaby sounds like a cartoon dinasaur or something.

Sorry.

jellybeans · 05/09/2008 10:23

Don't like either.

AccipeHoc · 05/09/2008 10:25

Of the two, Magnus, definitely. I like that. Not that it's anything to do with me, but I prefer Fergus to Magnus. Really love the name Fergus. It's less 'now' than Magnus. Also kind of Scottish gaelic btu not Scando scottish.

I don't dislike Barnaby, but it's a tiny bit posh and goofy. I prefer more solid normal Gregory.

Magnus is a Cider, Barnaby is a bear.

LadyThompson · 05/09/2008 11:35

Both gorgeous. Love 'em! I hardly ever give my unequivocal approval either so you may win a small prize But what about Barnabas? Nice name in itself but a bit like both your names.

LaDiDaDi · 05/09/2008 11:40

Magnus, definitely.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 05/09/2008 13:25

Magnus

3andnomore · 05/09/2008 14:04

neither, sorry....

Neeerly3 · 05/09/2008 14:12

neither - Felix or Marcus perhaps?

frazzledoldbag34 · 05/09/2008 17:08

Barnaby is FABULOUS!
Magnus isn't....sorry

frazzledoldbag34 · 06/09/2008 18:21

But I have to add that this afternoon I heard of a good friend who just had a little boy and called him MAGNUS and it actually really suits him and his family. So perhaps my initial reaction was wrong. . . . .
I reckon it's a grower.

Brightfield · 09/09/2008 23:33

Thanks people.

Despite the negative response, I love Barnaby so much I think I'll eternally regret not using it.

Which middle name though?

Barnaby Milo (Milo just because I love it)
Barnaby Edward (Grandfather)
Barnaby Frederick (both G Grandfathers).

Also, to avoid starting another thread - what do you think of Mabel Ivy?

Thanks

I love Mabel Ivy. That's really nice.

I'd go for Barnaby Frederick. I love the name Frederick. Barnaby Milo is just too 'now', too middle-class, so overall it seems a bit like you're trying too hard. Barnaby Edward is nice but prefer Frederick, which is a perfect mixture of quirky fashionable and solid classic.

MrsWeasley · 10/09/2008 15:57

I loved Barnaby but DH didn't. After watching the birth (DS was just over 11lbs) he said I could name him whatever I wanted so I have a BARNABY and I still love it too pieces. He is now 8yo

Like all the middle names.

procrastinatingparent · 10/09/2008 16:05

Barnaby. All the best MNers have sons called Barnaby. And the creme de la creme have sons called Barnaby Edward.

mumoftwinz · 10/09/2008 16:14

dont like Magnus, but really like Barnabus. Which was on my list but DH vetoed it.
