Our other main contender is Verity.
What do you think of Briar, is it naff or nice?

Doesn't sound like a name to me. Or very attractive. Briony is nice though I know a little girl called Verity, and think it's pretty.

Anglepoise · 03/09/2008 17:47

It reminds me of Brer (?sp) Rabbit getting stuck in a briar patch. Can kind of see it working on a ravishing beauty with long auburn locks but bit of a hard one to carry off I think.

platypussy · 03/09/2008 18:02

Its not a name.

SoupDragon · 03/09/2008 18:03

No.

I know a Bryher (after the Silley Isle), I quite like it

Sassamac · 03/09/2008 19:37

I really like it. Ive never heard it as a name before but I imediately associated it with Briar Rose and as such think of it as a girls name. Its different but not weird. Infinately better than Verity IMO which I really dislike.

Wilkiepedia · 03/09/2008 20:52

No no no

frazzledoldbag34 · 03/09/2008 21:31

Verity or perhaps even Felicity? Both are nice although Verity does make me think of ferrets.....which I find slightly off-putting but you may not!

Briar is a bit strange and reminds me of Briar Rose (sleeping beauty I think - am sure it's been mentioned). Not to pursued I don't think

frazzledoldbag34 · 03/09/2008 21:33

Not to BE pursued I meant (sorry - unsettled baby, can't concentrate)...

bitsdroppingoff · 04/09/2008 13:50

How about Bryher - sounds the same and is my favourite island on the Scillies. It's used down here in Cornwall a bit - but then again so is Chayla.

MadreInglese · 04/09/2008 13:55

It would be a no no for me (the local mental health ward is the Briary)

What about Briony? That's quite similar

OrmIrian · 04/09/2008 13:57

Bryony better if you are after planty hedgy type names.

whoops · 04/09/2008 13:58

My friend called her dd Bryher after the island

zippitippitoes · 04/09/2008 14:01

naff

marymungoandmidge · 04/09/2008 14:02

I'm sorry - but I cannot understand this obsession with wanting to find the most unusual name going for your child...Its getting like America ...whats wrong with traditional names ? I have come across the following names in the last month - Gaius, Marrek, Kaii and these kids are spawned by Sharons, Nigels and Lisa's...Its faintly ridiculous and somewhere in a baby name book in the future it will state alongside such names 'popular in 2006-2010'...and then everyone will be sick of these types of names...hopefully...

OrmIrian · 04/09/2008 14:12

I don;t think that Briar is outlandish and modern. Quite traditional.

LadyThompson · 05/09/2008 11:40

I think Briar is G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S.

not as keen on Verity, but it's ok
