Hum de hum, it is me again - just want to test this one out.

Love Francesca, love Cesca for a younger girl and think Frankie is cute when you are a teenager.

Goes well with our surname and DD1 and DD2's names.

Mumsnet general opinion... ?

If ds had been a girl he would have been called Francesca.

I like Fran, what's wrong with that?

pgwithnumber3 · 01/09/2008 21:44

Sorry Wendy I just don't like it as a name, probably has more to do with my mum's cousin being a Fran (Frances) and she is a terrible snob. I love Francesca and Frances though. Do you not think I should call DC3 Francesca if I really don't like Fran?

PGwithno3,

"I only think you end up being called Fran if you let people and I WOULD NOT let people call my baby Fran!"

That's true but if your baby (when she's older) decides she wants to be called Fran - would you tell her she's not allowed to call her that?

A serious question, We named our eldest Eloise, I don't particularly like the name Ellie (didn't think that through properly when I was pregnant )- and we don't call our daughter that, but she has decided she likes to be Ellie, and goes through intermittant stages of demanding she is called that. Your argument only works whilst the child is a baby, for the first five years or so of their lives, then for the rest of their 85 years of their lives, they choose their own names, and if it is a pet name you hate, well, you're kind of stuck with it. So it is important to consider if you give your child a name, will you be happy calling your child any of the associated pet names should they decide that is what they want to be called for thenext sixty / seventy years of their lives?

Elkat · 01/09/2008 21:58

sorry, call herself that?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 01/09/2008 22:01

Niece is Francesca and is always called that. She's a feisty girl and has no qualms about telling people who call her Fran or Franny to desist.

Tommy · 01/09/2008 22:02

That was a name we considered for DS1 - didn't suit him when he came out though

(BTW - I love it)

AbbeyA · 01/09/2008 22:05

I like it but hate all short forms, Frankie being the worst.

frankiesbestfriend · 01/09/2008 22:05

Dd is Francesca Estelle, and we use Frankie as a nn.

Nobody has ever shortened it to Fran, which I dislike. In fact nobody shortens it at all, except dh and I.

Fortunately dd also dislikes Fran and is quite outspoken so don't think this nn will ever happen.

Francesca is a beautiful name![unbiased emoticon]

BibiThree · 01/09/2008 22:07

Absolutely LOVE it, it was one of the choices for one of our twins.

lastboxoftampons · 01/09/2008 22:07

I love it - it's our top pick for a girl's name. Works well for us as my dad is Frank and I would love to honor him but just couldn't name a baby boy Frank

highschoolmusical · 01/09/2008 22:08

Hate it! Sorry.

Wisteria · 01/09/2008 22:08

my youngest is Francesca and we have always called her Cesca, can't stand Fran on a child but quite like it on an adult....

Spink · 01/09/2008 22:09

Our ds is Frank and mostly gets called Frankie, I love it for a boy or girl.

lickleolme · 01/09/2008 22:11

I know someone who is called Francesca, the womans brother started calling her Cesca, and as it reminded her mother of a cespit, she dropped Francesca as a name at 6 weeks and now she is a marie.

Wisteria · 01/09/2008 22:13

cesspit????

frankiesbestfriend · 01/09/2008 22:16

Surprised at some reactions, didn't think such a pretty but traditional name could inspire hatred

googgly · 01/09/2008 22:32

I live in Italy and practically every little girl here is called Francesca (always reduced to Franci, pronounced Franchie). There's really no name more commonplace here.

Lionstar · 01/09/2008 22:35

I know 2 Francescas shortened to 'Ches', one adult and one infant and it suits both of them.

Wisteria, truly the woman in question is about 45 now and from 6 weeks old has only ever been Marie! My Great Aunt (Marie's mum) was so distraught she never called her Francesca again.

Wisteria · 02/09/2008 19:00

Cesca (but pronounced 'ch') is my dd2 but I can imagine it being a little odd if pronounced with a soft 'c' and understandingly reminiscent of a cesspit

Weegiemum · 02/09/2008 19:22

I really like it.

I would never have used it as would really not go with surname, but I like it!

brightyoungthing · 01/03/2010 12:25

Hi, My Daughter is called Francesca Maria and I wanted her short name to be Frankie but she hates it! She has all her freinds call her Fran or Cesca, and even Cessie! I hate it but I'm sure when she's a teenager she'll insist on being known as Frankie.

brightyoungthing · 01/03/2010 12:34

To pgwithnumber3, I wonder if we are related as I have a great aunt called Fran(Frances) and she's the worst snob going! She thinks I named my daughter Francesca after her and always calls her Fran just to annoy me. I should tell her that if she was named after her she would be called snobby cow!! Francesca is such a pretty girly name and rather princessy too!!
