I met a tiger and spike, brothers and their mum had t-shirts made up with their names on them. Her reason for giving them thoise names is that EVERYONE gets a nickname, so she gave them theirs. Dont agree that everyone gets a nickname and happily chosedn 2 traditional names for my boys that can be shortened if they wish... Although the names she chose were way out there after i thought about it actually realised 2 very successful people with those names, spike milligan and tiger woods

beanieb · 31/08/2008 22:00

call them sharon.

Blandmum · 31/08/2008 22:01

But Spike milligan's real name was Terence Alan Patrick Seán Milligan.

Spike was a nickname

MamaMaiasaura · 31/08/2008 22:03

ohhh, see i am not all that clever Tiger was a real name tho?

southeastastra · 31/08/2008 22:07

ow i didn't mean to start so an emotive thread frazzled, it was just the harley thread that made me start it...

wiki, it say

Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods

so it would seem that Tiger is a nickname too.

Give your child a real name, and if they want, they can have a nickname later. Harder to do it the other way round.

Why are people averse to using pet names, while giving their child a standard one?

southeastastra - I'm just curious............

Anchovy · 31/08/2008 22:12

My goddaughter's mate at school is called Maverick. I'm quite prepared to stick my head above the parapet and say that is a "silly" name that I don't think is going to look any better when the questionable idea of calling a child a name from a faintly crap film is forgotten.

Blandmum · 31/08/2008 22:14

the Geronimo thread also made me draw breath

ahem. I met one of the American fighter pilots who were involved with the filming, and only one of the stars of the film didn't go up for a trip. Wanna guess which one???

Blandmum · 31/08/2008 22:17

LOL at your dog being Maverick.

My car was Tibby, but I wouldn't choose that for a name for my dd

southeastastra · 31/08/2008 22:20

i dunno frazzled i come across some weird names and imagine the children as grown ups with that name.

I think there is a culture now of trying to think of a name nobody else has. Which leads to these crazy name suggestions. When I was little (back in the old days...), people went for the 'Louise' 'Sarah' 'Jane' 'Helen' type names without worrying that they were popular.

Whereas now, people seem to prefer to make up their own names rather than risk having a child in the same class with the same name!!!

Blandmum · 31/08/2008 22:27

My cat was Tibby. Tibby would be a stupid name for a car. My car is called Zorba

Clary · 31/08/2008 22:48

MB lol at yr last post.

I agree, Maverick and Geronimo are, ahem, unusual....

tortoiseshell · 31/08/2008 22:49

Isn't Geronimo the English version of Hieronymus?

NotAnOtter · 31/08/2008 22:51

my cats were Kofi and Genghis FAB names

current cat Bernard!

Blandmum · 31/08/2008 22:51

well TBH I would really go for that spelling either, if I'm being honest...

My mum went to school with a Sky back in the 60s/70s she said at the time EVERYONE thought it was a really odd name and the parents used to call it 'silly'

now of course someone called Sky would not cause any eyelids to batter - whats silly now wont be in 40 years time (apart from Apple)

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 01/09/2008 10:11

The world will end in 2011 so it's all fuss over nothing really. Call em what you like.
