Middle names: My surname plus another, or just my surname?

We are pretty much set on a first name for our dd, due in October, and she will definitely be having my surname as a middle name and dh's as her surname.

However, I think the full thing - firstname mysurname dhsurname sounds a little bit odd, mainly because the first name and my surname have similar endings. DH doesn't agree and thinks it's fine, and also, you wouldn't hear it in full much anyway, only firstname dhsurname, which I like very much.

So, I've been thinking of adding in another middle name to go between the first name and my surname. Do you think this would be too long, given that we'd only be doing it to make the full name sound better?

My dd and ds both have 2 middle names. One is the same, which is a family name of dh's. Dd can't stand it and if anyone asks her middle name she just says Helen (which is after my mum) she would never tell anyone the second one but hopefuly it will grow on her as she gets older.

I would add another middle name, because if your dc's only have your surname as a middle name, it might seem a bit odd...if they have a 'normal' one as well they can just tell people that one if they want!
btw my children have a second name and my surname and are known by dh's surname - both of them really don't like having my surname in their names so I think if that was all they had they might feel hard done by!

My dc both have my surname as a middle name and another middle name before it, neither of their middle names are used much but I still like the fact they have them. Ds1 has middle name after dh mum and ds2 after my dad so it really means something to us and hopefully them in the future. Could you do the same and give her a name after someone?

Hmmm, interesting. That's a shame elliott that your dcs don't like having your surname in their names - perhaps it'll grow on them as they get older. A friend from university had her mother's maiden name as her middle name and she seemed to like it

I hadn't thought about a second middle name giving her the choice not to use mine if she didn't like it I guess it's sensible though.

I'll run it by DH again and see if he changes his mind. I think we were both relieved to have found a name we liked. We'll have to start looking at those lists again!

I think its just that surnames as middle names can feel a bit strange - but they are the kind of thing you tend to like more as you grow older, just not when you're a kid and want to be like everyone else.

I have firstname middlename mumsmaidenname surname, and frequently left mum's maiden name out. I was really glad to have a "proper" middle name too. However, I am now considering double-barrelling mine & my husband's surnames so will have a v long name!! I appreciate why my mum added her maiden name now and like the link with the past, so your dc will probably get to liking whatever their name is in the end!
