Baby names - how much alliteration is too much?

We have a DS, whose name is a J name. Am expecting DD, and after mucho mucho fighting, we are starting to come to some sort of compromise with regard to names.

However, our pre-decided and much loved middle name for DD is a J name and we do not want to change it, AND one of the names we actually (finally) agree on as a first name is also a J name.

It is too much to have a DD with alliterative first and middle names, even though I find that middle names seem to be largely irrelevant these days. And, the J and J with regard to DS and DD. I really never wanted to have this, but now this name comes up...

Is it too much? Both DH and I are unsure.

HELP!

I have a TY, a TS and a TM - so not doesn't bother me in the slightest

BrownSuga · 20/08/2008 18:16

The names sound ok together as bro and sis. But I have a friend with initials JPP also and he is known as JP. Your DD could become known as JJ, so could end up with a JP and JJ as nn if you go that route.

LongLiveCuckoo · 20/08/2008 18:25

I'm not a big fan of it. It's a bit themey, even if it wasn't meant to be.

Jake and posy would be nicer imo.

LazyLinePainterJane · 20/08/2008 20:34

Well, not sure about DH, but my intention would be for her to be Posy, so that covers that.

As for the JP thing, DS may become that when he chooses to but we have never referred to his as such. In fact, FIL tried to do so once and he was told off!

FAQ, you have 3 T's? How old are they and does anyone ever comment? TBH I am starting to think that other people really don't give a fig

I think DH is coming around. (He might be reading this)

I know a brother and sister called Andrew and Alex and it's never been a problem in 37 years!

TheOldestCat · 23/08/2008 19:07

Jake and Josie/Josephine sound lovely - I think the vowel sounds being the same would be too themey (Jake and Jane). And if she's going to be a Posy then that sounds good too.

Anyway, alliteration never seemed to worry Topsy and Tim...

Must declare an interest though - am biased because DD is Josie! Naturally, I think it's a fab name

Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy.

3andnomore · 23/08/2008 21:23

Jake and Josephine sound lovely together, imho

Anna8888 · 23/08/2008 21:24

Personally I wouldn't give two children in the same family the same initials.

3andnomore · 23/08/2008 21:30

I think if it is girl and boy it doesn't matter so much...but wouldn't give two the same sexed children names with the same initials

ellceeell · 23/08/2008 21:32

We have two with the same initials and it has become a bit of a problem as they've got older. When they get post addressed to T. Other we don't know who it is for. Not quite so bad when one is a Miss and the other is a Mr, but ours are both Miss.

mrz · 23/08/2008 21:43

A family living near me have given their 6 children alternative initials starting with C then J then back to C then J ...which I always found slightly odd

saggyhairyarse · 23/08/2008 21:48

I have a Jacob and Jemma so I obviously think it is fine

pgwithnumber3 · 23/08/2008 22:07

My Dad, and two brothers first names all begin with a P. Not intentional but it never caused a problem, not even with post!

ellensmelons · 02/09/2008 19:56

Just read this thread and found it really interesting! My dd is Josephine, named after my late mother. We shorten it to Josie and that's how everyone knows her. I'm currently preg with a boy and thinking about the J and J alliteration. We both love Jacob. Also, there'll only be 12 months between them, so a bit of a Topsy and Tim thing going on...... which I like

LittleMissBliss · 02/09/2008 20:11

Ds is J.J.J

The first J was the only first name that we agreed on Jacob

The middle J is DP's first name James.

The last J is dp's last name.

ds now gets called Coby for short.

So it's really CJJ

But i do think J.J.J writen down looks a bit daft! Oh well It sounds great said out loud, as it's really punchy and strong and we wont really ever use his middle name.

juneybean · 02/09/2008 20:13

There are three J's in this house, can be quite annoying when an envelope arrives with "J Surname" we all stand around and open it together...

LazyLinePainterJane · 02/09/2008 20:20

hey, ellen, then I won't be the only on with a Jake and a Josie I do still think that ideally, it is something I would have avoided, but we really seem to like the name Josephine, have given it a while to stick and nothing has come up against it.

Bliss, see the initials are another thing, I think though that the first and surname alliteration you can get away with is the names go well together and don't sound silly, and I think that generally a middle name is used so little that it doesn't matter.

I think that J is such a particular sound that it stands out more, DH and his sister both have C names but it's not something I have ever thought about!
