Right then, Romilly or Veronica?

I love Romilly - only fly in the ointment is a place called Romiley which is nr Manchester, where my parents are (they are not IN Romiley but its a place about 10 miles away from them). I have a DD already, told them I'd considered Romilly and they were really not impressed by it!! However, we don't live there, and Milly or Romy gives good enough alternatives. My DH is the big fan of Veronica, and I like it too, I have canvassed opinon on the name on this forum b4 - the results of which were very mixed, which made my DH more keen, he reckons a name shouldn't be 'just ok - it should provoke a reaction!' ANYWAY - need help! Thanks.

Romilly is affected. Screams 'I'm upwardly mobile...or think I am'

Veronica is cool. I grew up on Archie comics and loved veronica.

Themasterandmargaritas · 19/08/2008 15:04

I know a 2 yo Romilly and she is Rom and quite a character. So I like it. Preferable to Ronnie which is very Eastenders

hellebores · 19/08/2008 15:04

ooh - nicely put moondog. Unless you are v posh and can carry it off of course! Lovely name - don't make it another Milly though.

veronica is cool - Ronnie is a cool shortening - have to be quite a personality to pull that one off i would say.

Romy7 · 19/08/2008 15:08

please tell me romy is better than romilly then? ulp.
def not posh here. and panicking slightly.

Veronica for me, just to buck the trend. Like it shortened to Ronnie on a girl.

Heated · 19/08/2008 15:23

Actually I think Romilly is very pretty, Romy being the obvious nn. Similarish is Ottilie if you were worried about the Manchester link.

Normally I like old lady chic names but Veronica isn't one of them! Verity, Vanessa, Vivienne are nicer V names imo or there are better names that end in -ica/-ika.

MrsMattie · 19/08/2008 15:26

Romily is quite pretty. But agree re: Milly / Tilly being so over used.

Veronica - Nah

mamabea · 19/08/2008 15:32

I know a really lovely Romily (2yo) and like the name.

pacinofan · 19/08/2008 15:52

Veronica, defo, but then I'm a tad biased as this name has passed to 3 generations in our family. DD1 has it as a middle name and we often use 'Ronnie' with her christian name. I think it's quite cool, though not sure my mum would agree!

Romy7 · 19/08/2008 16:22

thank goodness for that.
thought i'd have to pay a visit to flouncer's corner

Indith · 19/08/2008 16:30

Both are great, I love Romilly though.

Tatties · 19/08/2008 16:36

I have a soft spot for Veronica

hollyandnoah · 19/08/2008 16:47

I love Romilly, Romy is cute for short. Yes, i've never heard of that before, but it is really pretty!
BUT i don't really like Milly on it own.

Veronica makes me think of Rona for short and old ladies, but not a cool old lady name. iykwim? There was a veronica in my year at school - i'm 22- and i always thought it was strange on her and i kept wanting to call her something else.

Tinker · 20/08/2008 00:39

My first thought was Romiley as well. But, if you don't live nearby you can get away with it. Veronica will become Ronnie. Reminds me of Madonna (her confirmation name) therefore I dislike it, sorry.

LaDiDaDi · 20/08/2008 11:00

Romilly is the nicer of the two.

LazyLinePainterJane · 20/08/2008 11:04

I love Veronica. T'is one of my favourites, DH said no though.

devonkeen · 29/12/2009 23:38

I'm called Romilly and am VERY pleased I'm not called Veronica. Romilly is an old French Surname that came over to England.

My Dad told me when I was younger that it meant "friendship" not sure that was true but I like it!! They saw it on the credits of a film and liked it.

I have never been called Milly, although I've come across a Romilly who calls herself Milly. I get called Rom a lot and friends often call me Rommers.

There is a Romilly Road in Soho and somewhere in Cardiff called Romilly Park (I think) Famous Romilly: Romilly Weeks Newsreader/presenter! not so impressive! hehe

NOT veronica!!!

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/12/2009 23:50

I love Veronica. The greek version of Veronica is Hebe, btw, which is also a lovely name.

Not hugely keen on Romilly, slight pretentions about it and makes me think of a earnest mother dressing baby Romilly in corduroy pinafores. Think also is a downwarldy mobile name so there will probably be loads of Romillys in a couple of years and may well be the Evie of the next decade.

RnB · 30/12/2009 07:39

Boo Cusry...my baby is likely to be Romilly if a girl. Romy for short. I think it's lovely.

OP - my dp loved Veronica too, but I think it's quite harsh sounding

FoxyRevenger · 30/12/2009 10:43

Romilly is nicer than Veroncia - reminds me of verucca.....if you like Romilly but not 100% sure, what about Romola? It's Italian.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 31/12/2009 18:06

romilly. not too keen on veronica.

Rosemary could be Romy for short too.

kittywise · 31/12/2009 18:07

neither. I know a couple of horrible romilly's.

Heated · 31/12/2009 18:10
