Dp has mentioned that he likes this. I'm not sure.
Opinions would be helpful.

I kind of like it - it's a cute name!

3andnomore · 28/08/2008 14:28

not keen on it at all...and if Barnaby Bear isn't bad enough, people might shorten it to Barney (as in that gross purple Dinosaur thing...shudder)

jamescagney · 28/08/2008 14:31

there was a programme "barnaby Jones" twas mindless drivel and I enjoyed it immensely!

LuLuBai · 28/08/2008 14:41

I love it, and every Barnaby or Barney I know has been good looking and great fun.

janeite · 28/08/2008 14:53

I really like it.

LadyThompson · 28/08/2008 16:53

I love it but I second Effie P - Barnabas has got the edge for me.

gladders · 28/08/2008 16:55

quite sweet - and like the idea of barney for a little boy?(clearly not to be used alongside fred though.....)

MerryMarigold · 28/08/2008 17:47

I LOVE Barny. But the purple dinosaur put me off a little. Still, most names will have an association, and by the time your ds hits 5 he won't be watching cbeebies or Barny anymore.

TillyScoutsmum · 28/08/2008 17:49

I love it - would have been dd's name if she'd have been a boy

llareggub · 31/08/2008 19:35

I know a Barnaby, and love the name. He gets called Bingo, never Barney.

LisaClapham · 02/09/2008 12:53

I am in the process of trying to convince DH to call our baby Barnaby (if its a boy). He is unsure (coz of Barnaby the bear) but i love it - hadn't thought of shortening to Barnes, which I LOVE. My only fear was how common it currently is - I have no idea

nowirehangers · 02/09/2008 13:38

I have a good friend called Barnaby
He was teased mercilessly through school about his name, he prob would have been teased anyway (he turned out to be gay and was different from the other boys) but the name didn't help
Times have changed though and more unusual names are far more common so you could probabaly get away with it if you love it. We call him Barns

FfreckleFface · 02/09/2008 14:29

I love it. Little Ff would have been either Barnaby, Atticus, or Ieuan had she been a boy. (MIL has since confided that she is grateful I had a girl because 'all the boys names you liked were ridiculous'. Don't let her put you off!)

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/09/2008 14:53

LisaClapham - Barnaby was the 264th most popular boys name last year (136 boys called it), and was marginally more popular the year before.

I like it. Was in about 4th place when picking ds' name recently, but sadly the 'Becky and Barnaby Bear' connection did put us off.

Also bear in mind that it's quite a difficult name for a young child to pronounce. Dd is 2.6 and has excellent speech, but she always refers to Barnaby as 'Barmfy' . Obviously this is only a problem for the first few years, so it may not bother you.

mell242 · 02/09/2008 14:58

No, personally not keen

MrsWeasley · 02/09/2008 15:05

finneganswake: Please ignore all those who dont like BARNABY. It is the best name ever

Not Barnabas thats the name of the church clock covered in pigeon poo that we can see from MIL house.

My Barnaby (sometimes called Barnes or BB by me, called Beano my DH) was born before Barnaby Bear (the one with Becky) but not before this cute little chap

TBH DH wasnt keen at first he wanted Jamie but when they weighed DS at birth DH said call him what ever you like so I did. (he was a big baby, but isnt a bid child)

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

cambridgekate · 03/09/2008 14:16

I Love it!!!!.we have a good friend who has a 1 year old Barnaba (known as Barney!) and it suits him very well indeed...he gets barns and b boo!

I also knew a 26 year old and he used the Barns variation which sounded v cool down the pub

cambridgekate · 03/09/2008 14:17

sorry obviously meant barnaby not barnaba

frazzledoldbag34 · 04/09/2008 10:18

I love Barnaby (I've said that already, and used to have a lovely car called it)
Have just been reading the thread and have decided to add it to my list of boys names because I LOVE the short forms of Barnes, and BINGO (that is inspired!) and also Barns and Beano - oh my how cute.

Bol**cks to DH who will say it's too pretentious .... its my turn to choose this time and I'm the one that has to squeeze an 8lb child out of my foufou so that's it..........
it's better than his suggetion (Elton, Ray or Hamish) any day!

Millie26 · 04/09/2008 12:42

Barnaby is gorgeous!

ForeverOptimistic · 04/09/2008 12:53

It is sweet but it suits a child more than an adult.

I can't really imagine someone calling out the name Barnaby at the crucial moment iyswim. Not that I gave that any thought when I was choosing names.

Ignore me I'm talking rubbish. It is a sweet name.

AccipeHoc · 04/09/2008 15:25

I don't mind about the Barnaby Bear thing or Barney the dinosaur. Or Milo the Tweenie, or Jake the Tweenie, and Max the uncle of the Tweenies! Charlie and Lola, George from Peppa Pig, Finley the Fire Engine, Rory the Racing Car. Amelia from Rubberdubbers. Lucy from 64 Zoo Lane, Anna Bell the Doll, or Genevieve the Barbie doll..... there are more, Harry and Hermione from Harry Potter.

There wouldn't be a name left tbh. But, saying all of that, I prefer Gregory to Barnaby, it's less predictably now and less , what is the word.... well, wanky?! Or, Malachy (Malakee)

noddyholder · 04/09/2008 15:26

no but did love the tv show.Is it still on?

MayBloom · 04/09/2008 15:35

I think it's cute, but it's the kind of name you give to a pet, not a child iykwim? Not a huge fan, sorry.
