It's my grandmother's name, dp and I both love it, but is it TOO old fashioned? I'm afraid I cannot STAND some of the celeb tryhard names that you see floating about, so it has to be what I would consider to be a sensible proper name! (let's just hope she's not too contrary!)

It's a bit too, um, fundamental for me. I don't like these weighty names like Mary, Adam, Eve and Joseph. They're just a whisker away from Jesus, which would be quite a cross to bear.

EffiePerine · 15/08/2008 16:41

middle names, hmm, something simple but a bit longer?

depends on surname

Mary Abagail is nice but not if your surname is Davies

Lakelover · 15/08/2008 16:53

thanks for the suggestions! am so thrilled to have such a great positive response - great to have MAD as your initials! My Gran doesn't have a middle name actually, so I might just leave it as the one name. We already have a Tom William and the surname is short, Lowe.

Mary Lowe sounds lovely

love it

KristinaM · 15/08/2008 17:02

mary is a great name - will never date and will work in many cultures and languages

if you are worried that its too old fashoined, why dont you go for a more contemporary middle name?

Janni · 15/08/2008 17:25

It's pretty.

Mary TigerApple should do the trick if you were worried about being oldfashioned

CuckooChocolateOrange · 15/08/2008 17:53

I almost like it. I certainly don't dislike it.

Maribel would be unusual and pretty. Marianne would be very classy. Mariella would be of the moment.

But just Mary is a little too Holy Joe for me. I just wouldn't pick it myself, but I would still think, how refreshing if I did come across a little Mary.

OracleInaCoracle · 15/08/2008 17:56

love it. its a classic name that isnt over-used.

priceyp · 15/08/2008 18:05

MaryBS, my family seem to interchange it through the generations, Mary Catherine, Catherine Mary, sometime varying the spelling!! No Bernadettes yet tho!! My mum told me the tradition is to call all girls Mary then give them the second name as the name you would like to call them!

SilentTerror · 15/08/2008 18:16

My DD is Elizabeth Mary!

wheresthehamster · 15/08/2008 18:21

Mary Ann Lowe. Either call her Mary Ann or just Mary.

LaDiDaDi · 15/08/2008 18:21

Too many family connotations for me but nothing wrongwith it as a name imo.

Mary Martha
Mary Eliza
Mary Francis
Mary Helena
Mary Sophia

powpow · 15/08/2008 18:22

i love mary. it's my SIL name and we were considering it during my last pregnancy.
maybe.....

justkeepswimming · 15/08/2008 18:27

Is our name for whenever we have a dd (have 2 ds so far).
My name is originally Kathryn so we're thinking Mary Kathryn.

Go for it

Reginaphilangy · 15/08/2008 20:20

I love the name Mary but only with the right accent. I couldn't use it for any of my dd's because of my dodgy northern accent (it comes out as 'murry' as in rhyming with furry )

JuneBugJen · 15/08/2008 20:21

adore it. Restrained but quirky.

AbbeyA · 16/08/2008 09:05

I like it, I am not sure why it has been out of favour for so long.

timeless name.

MrsMattie · 16/08/2008 09:40

I really like Mary.

turquoise · 16/08/2008 10:10

I love it. Really wanted it for dd but MIL wouldn't allow it .

It's classic, timeless, ageless - yet hardly anyone's called it these days (babies I mean).

Pinkchampagne · 16/08/2008 10:25

One of my middle names, which I hated as a teenager, but kind of like it now!
