I quite like the name Wilfred but I just emailed it to my DP and he was absolutely AGHAST.. I honestly don't think its that old/strange/bully-magnetising etc but then I'm not British..
Is it really so awful? Its the first name of your (second) greatest war poet..

like it
and other old fashioned names like Edmund and Montgomery

FabioFridgeFluffFrenzy · 13/08/2008 16:55

It's CatherineTate's grandad in Dr Who I think.
At least he could be a Will for short. Or a Fred.

MrsMattie · 13/08/2008 16:55

Terrible. Taking the whole retro thing way too far.

stillstanding · 13/08/2008 16:57

I love old-fashioned names but Wilfred is a step too far in my book ...

3andnomore · 13/08/2008 16:59

I totally dislike it...to me it's in teh same category as Manfred and Guenther (shudder)

jette · 13/08/2008 17:00

Wow - I don't really see it as an old man's name at all! I just think of it a bit like William..

no no no no no!

pointydog · 13/08/2008 17:01

It's no good holding up Wilfred Owen, you know. If that argument had any clout 20% of boys would be called Elvis.

wb · 13/08/2008 17:01

A friend of mine called her son Wilfred 3 years ago. I was when she told me, thought it was awful, it put me in mind of the kid in the Beano that peers at the world over his jumper.

But you know what, people get used to things really quickly. Nowadays 'Wilfred' to me is a little boy w. brown curls and a Thomas the Tank engine obsession. And I quite like it.

belcantavinissima · 13/08/2008 17:02

belcantavinissima · 13/08/2008 17:02

god sorry i cant spell at all today

Nbg · 13/08/2008 17:02

Love it.

Wilf for short.

I like Ernie too, Ernest.

Weegiemum · 13/08/2008 17:12

No. Don't Do It

But then I am not keen on all old man/old lady names which suddenly seem very fashionable.

I'd worry cos (1) old man names are not cool IMO and (2) old man names are going to date very quickly.

And it is just ... i dont know ... yeuch

sorry.

3andnomore · 13/08/2008 17:12

Jette, where are you from originally...and is it a commonly used name there?

MrsBates · 13/08/2008 17:14

I met a baby called Wilf with very cool parents and he was a great little bloke so it can work. I like Stan too. Back to to trenches boys!

I think all names will eventually "do their rounds" again.

cremolafoam · 13/08/2008 17:44

yes would probably draw the line at Norman Cecil and Siegfreid

GrimmaTheNome · 13/08/2008 17:49

Not just any old-mannish, but Steptoe senior is what springs to my mind. If you're not British you may not understand this, but trust me its not good.

Boco · 13/08/2008 17:51

I love Wilfred so much. I know i"m not having any more babies so i had to use the name for dds guinea pig instead, he's Wilfie. But would be even better on an actual human baby. It's lovely. Met a little boy called Wilf and he was very cool.

I'm not keen.

And showing my age but this is the first person I thought of when I saw "Wilfred".
