We have a friend called Vashti and we think it is a beautiful sounding name. Its from the book of Esther in the old testament.

What do you think? Not sure if friends/family would think it was to weird for us!

Thanks

gorgeous

Lionstar · 12/08/2008 22:28

Ah, she'll probably be the 'other' Vashti that I heard about recently though. So funny

RustyBear · 12/08/2008 22:37

It was the name of a Siamese cat in Monica Edwards Punchbowl farm books (and of Monica Edwards own Siamese) So it always says 'cat' to me.

claudib · 12/08/2008 22:39

Hasn't done Vashti Bunion any harm. but then the surname would've deflected it somewhat..

WendyWeber · 12/08/2008 22:40

It says cat to me too, RB (& for the same reason! Do you remember the calf called Woodruff "because she was born in a wood & her mother had a rough time"? )

cheesesarnie · 12/08/2008 22:40

the vashti i knew was living in bath but not from there.

RustyBear · 12/08/2008 22:42

Yes, that was Frenchman's Secret wasn't it? One of my favourites.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 13/08/2008 09:36

Isn't it persian? Vashti Bunyan

minouminou · 13/08/2008 09:53

does this welsh vashti have a sister whose name starts with a "C"?
cos if it is, then i know her too (vaguely), but i know her sister better

I also thought it sounded indian. It's also a persian name, meaning the beautiful one.
It's very pretty but sounds too Asian to me for a white child.

I think it either sounds Indian, or 'we want a biblical name, so are going for the most unusual name we can find in the bible'.

Vashti was quite a strong biblical character though - she was married to the king, and he got drunk one night and ordered her to dance naked for his friends. She refused, and he, worrying that women all over the land might start disobeying their husbands, got rid of her and married Esther instead.

BuwchBywiog · 13/08/2008 10:58

minouminou yes she she does

minouminou · 13/08/2008 11:13

oooooh, fancy that!
i went to a nearby university, you see....that's how i know her sister, as she was part of the scene, as it were

Mamazon · 13/08/2008 11:17

vashti bunyan? oh dear it sounds like a foot washer.

I rate all names by how quickly i can think of a mickey take. if i as an adult can find one pretty quickly then a child will have figured one out in about 3 seconds.

BuwchBywiog · 13/08/2008 12:34

Went to the same Uni myself.

hoxtonchick · 13/08/2008 12:38

i really like it, it was on our list for dd (we know a grown up one too, but she's not welsh!). i like the way it's unusual but simple, & is pronounced how it's spelt. go for it .

Romney · 21/08/2008 12:03

Oooh, Vashti Bunyan. Lovely singer. "Another Diamond Day" has been on adverts tons over the last couple of years.

mabel1973 · 21/08/2008 14:07

my 1st thought was that it was a hindu name when I read it.
I wouldn't go for it personally.

Vashti777 · 20/09/2008 18:00

Hi all,

I'm one of the Vashti's you're talking about. I wasn't named after the other Welsh Vashti, I had to join mumsnet just to put that right! My mum and dad named me after Vashti Bunyan, the singer, as they had an album of hers, they didn't even know there was another Vashti in North Wales at the time!

I love my name very much. The only downside is having to spell it to people all the time! I just stumbed upon this conversation accidentally, whilst typing my name into Goggle, and it's quite weird to read some of the ruder comments about my name, bet whoever wrote them didn't realise a real Vashti would read their remarks!! I like having such an unusual name. And I love the biblical story of Queen Vashti, who was very feisty and wouldn't do as the king commanded! :-)

And I do live round the corner from a Vashti, which is really random!! Oh, and my sister's name does begin with a C.

A Vashti xxx

mynameisVashti · 20/09/2008 18:11

well i never thought i would read that in a mumsnet title!!!!

i have this name and i love it, although before people meet me they assume like others have said that i will be indian...

But it is a great talking point and quite nice to have something out of the ordinary..

like every name you will get those who love and those who hate it

only you can decide what you like!!

Peachy · 20/09/2008 18:16

Love it
