We've chosen the middle name of Denise - his granddad's name was Denis and it's a name that recurs through the family.

He wants to give the first name of Nerys (said like Denise, but with an N).

Nerys Denise? He can't see the problem, said it rolls off the tongue! Someone help me make him see sense!

um edam -how do you pronounce the name 'Rhys' then please?

DRAGON30 · 12/08/2008 10:49

When 'y' is in the last syllable of a word it is pronounced as an 'i' - as in English 'ink'. The 'y' in single syllable words is v. unpredictable! So in short, 'y' can be 'uh', 'i' or 'ee', (but not 'ee' in Nerys-thats 2 syllables). Hope thats clear!

Oh, very good point, eachpeach! Am clearly lacking in imagination today... Wonder if the difference is that Rhys is one syllable and Nerys is two? Or if the 'h' makes a difference (like the y in Dylan being pron. sort of Duh?).

EachPeachPearMum · 12/08/2008 14:47

WHat I don't understand though is how the name 'AP Rhys'(ap reece) became 'Price' (pryce)- how does that work anyone?

1066andallthat · 12/08/2008 14:47

Nerys as in Nerys Hughes (The Liver Birds?). Actually, I love it the other way round - Denise Nerys. There is no reason why you can't use Nerys, all the time either. Half of my family go by their second name.

crumpet · 12/08/2008 15:03

completely irrelevant but We Love Nerys Hughes was a song by half man half biscuit...

marialuisa · 12/08/2008 15:13

Well there's Preece as well, which may be the missing link, in the Ap Rhys to Price thing? There's also Rhys-Reece-Rice as surnames Pronounciation got changed gradually and the variants developed?

PuppyMonkey · 12/08/2008 15:14

No No. horrid.

EachPeachPearMum · 12/08/2008 15:34

And Tink- some people pronounce 'Denise' as Duh-neez, which is different.
