Baby names

Mission Impossible- find me a boy's name conforming to (my) strict criteria...

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find a name (or names) for my son (due January, plenty of time yet). This is no ordinary namequest- there are strict criteria to adhere to...

  • no Top 50 names( I do not wish my child to be known as xxxx G. throughout his schooldays, I would prefer he was the only one in the school with his name)

  • cannot begin with 'G' or 'J' (surname issues) or 'R' (DH pronunciation issues)

  • no biblical names (I am a fervent atheist, DH is buddhist)

  • Unusual, but not wacky

We are m/c academic types, I am not an earth mother, nor a lentil-weaver (sadly); we are also quite removed from popular culture. I am therefore never likely to name my child 'Celestin' or 'Zaphod'...

    ...or Guybrush.

    Or Neo.

This thread will self destruct in 30 days (judging by the number of name threads at present),
    TIA

PPH roffling at your last post!

I love Gilbert too- something to do with reading lots of Anne of Green Gables I fear, but major clash in French (Dzheelbairrrr).

won't out myself, but far to close to actual surname.

Anton?

Sorry I just keep popping in with random suggestions

I loved gilbert too but it is considered to be a bad luck name in my dhs family so couldn't use it (one killed in WW1, one committed suicide as a young man )

So what is your shortlist after all these suggestions then?

Anton or Antoine or Antonio or Antonis or Anthony - works in every language you might need.

Obviously you'd have to ignore the Saint though...

OK I'm going to vote for Constantine. Strong name. Mediterranean name. Excellent associations for academics. Brits can pronounce it. Can be shortened to Con if he is feeling like a cool and groovy teenager. No Gs, Js or Rs in sight. If there is another one in his entire school career I'll eat my hat. What more could you want?

Well, so far....

Milo (but French way)
Arlo
Sebastian
Etienne (again)
Hector
Duncan (but this will be taken before I'm due )
Enzo
Atticus

.... but I know at least half of these won't get through DH. It's a start though!

I went out with an Ed for a while - short for Edmund - he's the only Edmund I've met... His brother was Quentin - although I have since met another Quentin... Both unusual, no r, g or js...

But re top 50 - I'm sure that my ds's name is in there, but he's the only x at his nursery - where there are 3 Scarlets in his group and at least 2 Fergus s - it seems at the moment that the traditional names are the less common

I am so desperate for Etienne if this is a boy but dh just will not budge.
He just keeps saying we cant we are english.
I adore this name tried for it last time. we had a girl.
DH hates all of my names. I want genevieve if a girl still wont budge on that one either.

Some lovely names been mentioned on here./

Captain Nancy - sympathies with your dh - I also have pronounciation problems with the letter 'r' and I find it rather annoying that my name has a prominant 'r'.
My children are aged 2 and 4 and both can roll their 'r's beautifully
