Middle name dilemma...

Thankyouandgoodnight · 22/07/2008 19:26

Our DD has the same middle name as me and we're expecting DC2 any day. If it's a boy, it will have the same middle name as DH (all the men in his family have the same middle name through the generations).

What do we do if it's another girl? We can't agree on any of the other 'family names' ie grandmothers / baby's aunts etc and it would cause jealousy between them I'm sure, knowing the personalities etc.

Would it be completely daft to give all girlies that we have, my middle name?

What would you do?

I'd give a completely unique middle name iyswim
ds had to have dh's middle name but with dd we were free to use what we liked, if she had ben a ds I told dh that only the first born was carrying on with any stupid traditions

I think it would be daft, yes.

If you want it to have some meaning, you could think of a favourite book or film character? Just for a talking point

Heated · 22/07/2008 19:38

No, not the same mn imo.

Give a name that has a special meaning to you both: the name of a best friend, a person you admire, a quality important to you (faith, hope etc), a family name that goes back generations, a favourite book or film character, a memorable place (friend's parents are keen amateur archaeologists and gave her the mn Delphi)

lollyheart · 22/07/2008 19:40

I have the same problem dd has got my middle name and ds has got dh middle name due ds2 in a few weeks so we are going for dhs name as middle name could you have your name as middle name?

Thankyouandgoodnight · 22/07/2008 20:03

Thanks everyone.

I do think that using my name would be a bit wierd - for us anyhow.

Now what on earth can we choose

Can anyone forsee any psychological issues if we didn't give her (if it's a girl) a middle name at all??

is there a feminine version (or something close to) of your dh's middle name? that could solve it. eg Alan/Elena, Robert/Roberta, Colin/Corrine

bluenosesaint · 22/07/2008 20:39

Don't know about any 'psychological issues' but it has always really bugged my sister that i have a middle name and she doesn't.

I would give dc2 a middle name, but not the same as your dd1's. I really like Brownsuga's suggestion of feminising dh's name

pointydog · 22/07/2008 20:41

I think the child without teh middle name will, at som epoint, feel she missed out

elijahblue · 22/07/2008 20:56

If a girl, how about giving her your first name as her middle name.

Hulababy · 22/07/2008 21:05

How old is DD1? Is she old enugh to be asked to give a DD2 her middle name - then it would be special for a whole new reason.

LuLuBai · 22/07/2008 21:17

I like the idea of DD1 choosing a name (provided she can be relied on to come up with something suitable rather than Dinky Winky or Fimble or something).

I think you do need a new name. A friend of mine has two names and when her sister was born her parents couldn't think of any more girls names so they gave her their DD's middle name as a first name and no middle name at all.

This has always been a serious bone of contention - at least for the younger sister (the older one is a little smug that she was bestomed with both the favourite names)

windyweather · 22/07/2008 21:24

What about your dh first name, girls version of course.
my dd middle name is Alanah after her daddy.
Just a thought if you want to keep the names all related.

mavornia · 22/07/2008 21:32

What's your middle name?

We might be able to suggest something related/another version in another language if we know what it is

LuLuBai · 22/07/2008 21:33

Oh yes - good idea. Could pick something with the same meaning.

KristinaM · 22/07/2008 21:36

using a family name as a middle name is common in many cultures and most people accept that you cant use everyone's name

can you use the name of someone who is dead? ( so they cant make the others jealous !)

Thankyouandgoodnight · 22/07/2008 21:50

My middle name is Lucy - great idea about the different language thing. I don't want a female version of DH as it would be Brushetta or something similar.....very attractive.

I guess Lucy comes from the Latin for light/light bringer so you could always go for something with a sun/moon/starry theme:

Astra (star in Greek)
Selene (moon in Greek)
Alya (sky/heaven in Arabic)
Luna (moon in Latin)

or my favourite Olwen which I gather means white footprint in welsh (because white flowers sprang up in the legend wherever the giant's daughter walked but it can also symbolically mean "the path the moon takes on water" which I think is just gorgeous)

Thankyouandgoodnight · 22/07/2008 22:18

oooh Luna was DH's fav choice of name in the first place and I wanted Lyra, so I know he would be up for it as a middle name BUT WHAT ABOUT MY LYRA

That is a thoroughly gorgeous meaning isn't it - the path the moon takes over water - absolutely beautiful.

OP posts:
mavornia · 22/07/2008 22:24

it's Harry Potter v Philip Pullman!

lyra is lovely - and the name of the constellation in the northern sky containing the star Vega

I reckon you trump your dh!

mavornia · 22/07/2008 22:29

also love Aurora (dawn in Latin)

Thankyouandgoodnight · 22/07/2008 22:39

I just wish he liked it so we could use it as a first name! I adore it so much

Thank you for your vote though
