Layla or Leyla I think

not all that keen tbh

What about Laura?

Loriycs · 17/07/2008 16:00

laila, or even better - leila
i dont like it with the Y as i think laYla could become replaced with something derogatory in teenage years if you know what i mean........

thelittlestbadger · 17/07/2008 16:01

Pretty name, prefer laila or leila. However round these parts (N.London) every other girl seems to be called some variation on leila.

Anna8888 · 17/07/2008 16:15

How about

Leya
Layan
Layani

pedilia · 17/07/2008 16:38

I have just called DD4 (3 weeks) Layla, there are no other laylqs in school/nusery, I chose that spelling as Leila can be pronounced leela.
Obviously i love it

egyptianprincess · 17/07/2008 16:55

i am a laila (pronounced lila). i have to say- i always get compliments on my name.
lila is the egyptian pronounciation-means loved one in arabic. layla is the common pronounciation in the rest of the middle east and the one favored by eric clapton.

Its nice and I dont think it matters that its very Clapton, there are worse songs!

Bumperlicious · 17/07/2008 17:27

My DD is almost that name but without the first 'a'. Never met anyone else called it, but not too "out there". We love and always get complements on it.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 17/07/2008 17:31

I think it's pretty and feminine, but also quite strong. Doesn't make me think of Eric Clapton.

OverMyDeadBody · 17/07/2008 17:34

It is, without a doubt, the best name in the world. I prefer the spelling Layla but it doesn't make much difference really, some people will get it wrong no matter how you spell it.

I'm not a fan of the name Anna though.

LittleMissBliss · 17/07/2008 17:35

i think its a beautiful name!

LuLuBai · 17/07/2008 19:04

Love it. Would spell it Leila.

ByTheSea · 17/07/2008 19:05

I like the name but would also spell it Leila.

hw2004 · 18/07/2008 13:03

Really like it. There is one at DS's nursery spelt Leila but I quite like spelling Layla.

landj · 18/07/2008 18:24

My DD is Leila, I've met no others so I had no idea it was common! BUT... I AM FED UP with correcting people. ITS NOT PRONOUNCED LEELA!!!! Well, not by my reconing. Leila is an arabic word meaning night. So normally given to girls born at night, or dark haired. Mine born blonde at noon. Oh well!! AND... DH is a huge Eric Clapton fan.

nickeldime · 19/07/2008 09:33

Looks like among these forms, Layla's the most popular! Next in line are Laila, Leila, Lila and Leyla. Check out the piechart here:

DartmoorMama · 19/07/2008 09:41

My dd is called Laila, we spell it that way, but obviously there is leila, layla. Its getting more common now but still fairly rare. When we named our dd laila we didn't know anyone else with the name but I would say in the last 18months I have come across 4 other laila's two of which are friends which does seem slightly odd, of these 3 were newborns and 1 was a few months old so I would say its more common recently.
