Some friends, a Finnish / Italian couple, have just had a baby. They sent us a text saying that baby Fosca has arrived. Now I'm a bit stuffed 'cos I have no idea if Fosca is a male or female name. What do you think? TIA.

lol

Whoops! Mind you it is also a brand of cycling and running wear. I am assuming that they do not know this.

glad it's spelt differently but it's what came to mind. I believe there is a band called Fosca & would presume a baby with this name would be male.

Send a gender neutral card congratulating them on the birth of their baby?

idontbelieveit · 13/07/2008 22:49

If it ends in "a" and it's italian it's probably a girl.

broguemum · 13/07/2008 22:50

I think I will have to go gender neutral but if it was a girl I was going to buy a lovely cutsey girlie cuddly chicken (sounds wierd, but beleive me it is luverlie). I suspect Fosca is male but if it is an Italian name surely the "a" is the feminine form?

Could it be a typo ?

Heated · 13/07/2008 22:54

Happy to be corrected, in this reference Fosca isfemale

broguemum · 13/07/2008 22:54

not a typo - it's been in more than one text now. perhaps we shouls wait for the announcement card before we buy anything and hope the sex is specified!

I think a girl too.

idontbelieveit · 13/07/2008 22:55

is it supposed to be Tosca?

broguemum · 13/07/2008 22:57

Thanks Heated - they're a bit musically inclined so this might be it. Do I risk the chicken though? Heck, I'll just go for it! Thanks again.

But not all -a names are feminine - Luca is a man's name in Italy, I think.

HarrietTheSpy · 14/07/2008 00:16

fosca is a girl's name. have italian friend from uni of this name...

Ellbell · 14/07/2008 00:25

It means dark/dull/sullen/grim in Italian and (if Italian) is feminine.

broguemum · 14/07/2008 10:01

Thank you all for your help. Will be heading off to see dark/dull/sullen/grim baby at the weekend! Hope she does not live up to her name....
