Evelyn or Megan?

DH and I are at loggerheads debating these two names. I like the first, he likes the latter. I like Meg, not keen on Megan but DH says that Meg goes better with DS's name.

I don't want to discourage him as he has spent the last 23 weeks set on one name that I vetoed and refusing to budge so any movement in the name department is good.

So which do you prefer?

AND, if you like Evelyn, what other names do you like or possibly choose for your children as I love the name but feel strange using it?

Thanks!

Megan
Evelyn sounds old-fashioned to me, whereas Eve, Eva or Evie don't.

Youcanthaveeverything · 11/07/2008 18:48

I love Evelyn, and would strive to not get it shortned to, the more common at the moment, Evie.

If you like Eleanor, but can't go with that, how about Helena? this was on our list for a girl. Not common, classic and classy, and strong.

Claudia was also suggested on another thread, which I love and fits your 'unusual but not weird' criteria. Has same qualkitis as Helena I think.

Evelyns do not have blue rinses.

They wear pencil skirts, and have thier hair 'set' and wear a little pillar box a slight angle, and have perfectly pouty crimson lips and stockings with seams up the back (think Tippi hendron)

OR they might wear long beaded evening dresses, drink appertifs and discuss politics over dinner at their friends country house, and smoke ciragrettes out of holders (not that you want your baby to do this obviously)think Keira Knighly in Atonement.

But they certainly DO NOT have blue rinses.

DazedEmma · 11/07/2008 19:27

Evelyn is the prettiest name ever! So i vote Evelyn x

halogen · 11/07/2008 20:00

Evelyn is lovely. I think Megan is a bit 80s/90s, really.

LazyLinePainterJane · 11/07/2008 21:01

Ooooh such opposing opinion!!! Now that doesn't help me at all, you must all agree !!

I do quite like Helena but it is taken by a relative (as is Jennifer) so we can't use it, I'm not going down the family name route. Not sure about Claudia.

Dh is not budging from Megan. He gets like this with names, the last one he had decided we were using since before we were together . His confidence does not sway me.

I have a Megan who I insisted I would call Meg (Little Women was my fave book) but from the moment she was born she was Megan. Unfortunately terry Wogan and his TOG names have ruined Evelyn for me with the Evelyn Tentions TOG

purpleduck · 11/07/2008 21:19

Megveline

DarthVader · 11/07/2008 22:16

Evangelmeg

Ledodgy · 11/07/2008 22:17

Evelyn definately. I have an Eve.

23balloons · 11/07/2008 22:24

Evelyn - if I had a girl that would be her name but only have boys.....

3andnomore · 11/07/2008 22:24

Evelyn wins hands down....admittedly I do not like the name Megan, I find it very harsh sounding and ungirly, sorry to all the Megans out there ( I feel the same about my own name, by the way, lol)

shirleyghostman · 11/07/2008 22:35

Evelyn is a much nicer name than Megan.

Astrophe · 11/07/2008 22:40

If you like Eleanor but not Ellie, what about Alana / Ali?

minniedot · 11/07/2008 22:48

Sorry I cannot stand Evelyn, to me it's one of those biddy names that just isn't fashionable, unlike Florence, Kitty, Violet and Mary etc, it reminds me of Heavelyn, yuck sorry, Edith is another one I just don't get it.

I'd go for Megan.

Sorry for rant.

LazyLinePainterJane · 12/07/2008 08:58

Megveline and Evangelmeg

I think I might just call her baby. I have had enough of thinking up names. It wasn't this hard with DS, I feel much more under pressure to come up with a lovely yet practical girls name.

Penelope - no, just don't like Penny very much
Ruth - yes
Cecile - yes, lovely
Clementine - really like this but would worry about fruit associations. What about Clemency?
Laurel - love it
Sylvia - really like this and I wouldn't have said that a few years ago
Jennifer - don't like at all and really dislike Jenny as a nickname
Rowan - like it

halogen · 12/07/2008 11:11

Meredith is gorgeous.

LazyLinePainterJane · 12/07/2008 14:15

Clementine is a bit of a no-hope anyway, DH laughs every time I mention the name

I know someone here recently called their DD Meredith, it grows on me the sore I hear it.

Sim43 · 12/07/2008 14:20

LazyLinePainterJane · 12/07/2008 14:29
