My DH loves it, it's growing on me but still not completely sure....

Round us not one child is called Lily, Kitty, Mae of Ruby LOL
Different areas have different common names I guess.
Here people are still using Ella, Hannah, Scarlet, Chloe etc etc
Rather behind the times in rural England

I love Ruby - dark curly haired little girl with cute cheeky grin

LivvyW · 11/07/2008 13:37

I like it, thought about it for our DD, but surname is Murray

Sim43 · 11/07/2008 13:58

Funnily enough my other neice, (sister to Ruby) is called Lily!

bythepowerofgreyskull · 11/07/2008 13:59

reminds me of this

greenelizabeth · 11/07/2008 14:47

I like it but it's ubiquitous these days.

greenelizabeth · 11/07/2008 14:49

Ruby Murray! 6 yrs ago, I seriously might have picked Ruby except everybody in my office called a curry a Ruby and they would have MOCKED me. But that was quite local.

gingerninja · 11/07/2008 14:53

My fiesty little red headed Ruby is the only one I know. All names are popular somewhere unless you make them up, really you'll be hunting forever if you want a name no one else has got.

LadyThompson · 11/07/2008 14:55

I dunno...it's the second most popular name for newborn girls in Britain.

nkf · 11/07/2008 14:58

Nice and popular. Pretty. I think Pearl is sweet too but I wouldn't have the nerve.

Brangelina · 11/07/2008 15:09

I love it, it was my first choice for DD, partly because I love the Soft Cell song and partly because I was convinced she was going to be dark. However unfortunately it doesn't translate well where we live so DP vetoed it and my dark haired little girl has ended up blonde.

I'm a bit disgruntled about it becoming so popular, I've loved the name for the past 20 odd years, well before it was fashionable, along with a whole lot of other names that are now trendy. Maybe I should have got around to having kids in my 20s.

Or maybe I'm just a trendsetter.

Cantseesowhat · 11/07/2008 17:39

Very pretty

I had a Vietnamese girl called Ruby in my training. She was lovely!

Alishanty · 11/07/2008 21:40

Like it alot but know of 4 and have heard of others so wouldn't pick it myself. Shame as it's a lovely name.

amandine07 · 14/07/2008 11:21

I personally love Ruby, it is such a cute name. I guess it is a really popular name, but if you really like it does it make any difference? It's highly unlikely you will something unusual that nobody else will likely have, unless you go for something totally bizarre.

amandine07 · 14/07/2008 11:23

Meant to say- it's highly unlikely you will FIND something unusual that nobody else will likely have...

I hate rubies. So I hate Ruby by association.

Don't advise jewellery names - a bit bling. Flower names are much prettier and more tasteful.

belgo · 23/07/2008 15:03

I don't like any names beginning with an 'R'. Too many people will pronounce it Wooby.

pointydog · 23/07/2008 15:12

It's a name we considered for dd1 until a friend (dour sec teacher) said it was a cleaner's name.

I've gone off it over the years, not sure why.

pointydog · 23/07/2008 15:13

lord a lummy - just seen cod's post

nooka · 23/07/2008 15:17

I'm not keen personally - I like names with potential for different shortnings etc. Also really dislike Ruby from Max and Ruby it is quite common now, along with other old fashioned names. If you want to be more unusual you need to go for 70's type names (people often name after grandparents, much more rarely after friends of the same generation).

nooka · 23/07/2008 15:19

Oh, and you don't need to choose a bizarre name for it to be unusual! You can't guarantee that your child won't be in a classroom with another child with the same name, but avoiding names in the current top ten means it will be less likely there will be three or four of them.

clairebear88 · 23/07/2008 15:32

Hi

I love this name for my ficticious DD but a friend beat us to it. I think it has got more popular since Charlotte church named her daughter it and the song of course but its still a great name

Go for it

harpomarx · 23/07/2008 15:37

pointydog, clearly your dour sec teacher friend was Cod!

pointydog · 23/07/2008 15:49

if cod's a tall, gloomy bloke, perhaps

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 23/07/2008 16:36

I think it's a lovely name but, here too, it's very common (in the sense of prevalent) - when dd was at toddler group, there were always several Rubies, Ellas and Lolas.
