Posy was our number 1 choice for a girl.

Parker - not my cup of tea
Abraham - not bad, quite like it
Howie - for a baby yes - but for an adult man - NAH, maybe stick to howard which is quite nice

cyteen · 03/07/2008 12:26

Parker - meh, just makes me think of philandering frat boy in series 4 of Buffy.

Abraham - like it, Abe is a cool nickname.

Howie/Howard - bleurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.

LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 12:33

I was wondering if OP was Jewish too as all those three name choices are all ones that are def more popular in Jewish families.

Abe is a great name and I think sounds quite 'now'. I've known one Parker who is fab (and preppy and Jewish and American so fits the stereotype that is building up here). I can't quite get my head around Howie though.

I like Saul too.

minouminou · 03/07/2008 12:35

I like abraham the best

Twelvelegs · 03/07/2008 12:44

I am not Jewish, I have two boys already with pretty cool but not silly names and need another to slot in. I really like Cohen too, although one of my children has a surname sounding name already... not a common one and Parker is out the window because of this too.

Levi

Tommy · 03/07/2008 13:08

It would have to be Abraham for me as it is the only "proper" name IMO

(Tommy slinks away realising that she is turning into her mother... )

LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 13:10

Corin (a bit like Cohen but not so surnameish)

Sorry brain working v. slowly today and only able to conjure up one name at a time.

I'll think of another in about 5 mins.

LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 13:13

Noah

TsarChasm · 03/07/2008 13:18

Not keen on Howie. I'm thinking middle aged American golfer for some reason.

I also like Corin (as suggested by LuLuBai) How about Hayden?

Abraham could become Abe but that actually sounds very cool. Yes like that

No to Parker. I'm also getting a Thunderbird vibe on that.

I know a Seth, a Levi, and like both of thoses. A sad as it may seem my children have unique names and I have never met another child with either of my boys names and only one with my dd name.
I like Abraham for Abe.

Erm, none of the above.

LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 13:52

Harley or Harvey
Irvine or Irving

tryingtoleave · 03/07/2008 14:15

Cohen? As a first name for a non-Jewish boy? Why? I honestly would like to know. I'm Jewish and I don't understand the fashion for Jewish names among non-Jews. I wouldn't go near Abraham because it is too scarily biblical (although my ds does have a biblical name it is not so full-on). And every second young boy I meet at the moment is called Seth.

Twelvelegs · 03/07/2008 14:22

Good gracious if we all had to be the right creed or colour for a name what the bloody hell would most people do?

OP posts:
tryingtoleave · 03/07/2008 14:35

I don't mean to hog the names - I'm just interested in the attraction (especially since it's not like being jewish is particularly fashionable at the moment). And Cohen in particular has meaning - if you are called cohen you are not just jewish but part of a special caste of jews.

Actually though, I do like to stick to my own background and limit my range of choices to the usual sort of anglo names. When dh suggests names that clearly belong to other cultures like 'dmitry' or 'pierre', I think it sounds crazy for us. .

LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 14:36

Yeah but Twelvelegs - I can see Tryingtoleave's point. Cohen is a VERY Jewish name. It is a type of Rabbi. So a bit like calling a child Bishop or Parson or something.

LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 14:36

Sorry ttl - x posts

tryingtoleave · 03/07/2008 14:42

It means you are descended from the priests. But it is not just historical - it has meaning today. Cohens have special duties and restrictions. It is very prestigious to be a Cohen (me, I am just a plebian Israelite ).

Twelvelegs · 03/07/2008 14:44

Bishop or Preist, Levi is a popular name.

I am really struggling for a name, my ds may be called Jesus at this rate

OP posts:
LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 14:51

see Wikipedia for explanation of Cohen

tryingtoleave · 03/07/2008 14:52

So I gather from mn. I don't think it's quite reached australia yet - which is maybe why I'm still surprised. I'm sure it will start soon, all the other biblical names have taken off in the last few years. But I'm sure it's been a recent fashion here - how long have they been popular in uk? Or maybe I just wasn't aware of name fashions before ds. When I went to post-natal exercise two years ago I presumed that a woman in the class with twins called Reuben and Solomon was jewish. That's certainly not a presumption I would make now.

LuLuBai · 03/07/2008 14:52

Oh if you want something 'unique' avoid Jesus. Extremely popular in Spanish speaking countries and lots of other catholic cultures.
