What would you think of this? Boy named the masculine version of his mum's name

DH's preferred boys' name is the masculine version of my name. I also like the name (the boys' version, not mine) but feel a bit odd about the idea of having a child with a name so similar to mine. I also wonder what other people's opinion would be of it - what would you think of this?

Do you mean like Adrianna having a son called Adrian or Christine having a Christopher?

I am not that keen TBH but then I don't like sons being called after their dads either.

Piffle · 02/07/2008 14:19

I met a girl called Kennetha once, not always such a good idea!!!
Do the sound the same?

stillstanding · 02/07/2008 14:19

Hmmmm personally wouldn't go this route. Middle name fine but always thought a little dull (not to mention confusing) to have two people in the same house with same first name.

depends - although christine for example is the female version of christopher they sound different enough, i wouldnt think anything of it

depends on the names really

edamdepompadour · 02/07/2008 14:21

Not a good idea - keep it for middle if you must.

hunkermunker · 02/07/2008 14:21

DS2 is called a similar name to mine. Not a problem, imo - but depends on the names!

hunkermunker · 02/07/2008 14:22

All that matters is you like the name.

Why is it not a good idea? DS2 calls me "Mummy" so it doesn't bother him

LuckySalem · 02/07/2008 14:23

I know its not quite the same but i'm the female version of my grandad's name and it was different enough for it to work. I think I'd have been alright with the female version of dad's name (if there was one)

I don't see a problem as long as the nicknames aren't the same.

Eg: Christine and Christopher can both be shortened to Chris and you wouldn't know who was being called.

fryalot · 02/07/2008 14:25

I know a Pauline who had a boy and called him Paul.

It's okay. I don't think most people actually realise that the names are similar...

InTheDollshouse · 02/07/2008 14:31

It wouldn't seem a bit egotistical?

The names are really similar, especially with the nickname that the boys name would get shortened too (think Jacqueline and Jack, although it's not those).

I also agree about it being a bit boring to have two similar names in the family. Dunno, we're just finding it really hard to think of boys names we both like.

Nigel Lawson and Nigella? Although I think they must have liked boys-as-girls names because I think she had sisters Horatia and Thomasina (or I may have made that up )

Anyway - ds has the masculine version of my grandmother's name

Depends on the names I think. Hope it's not Horatio...

minouminou · 02/07/2008 14:32

we know a married couple called paul and pauline
can't remember what their DS is called now...angus or similar
anyway....errrrrrrrrr...do i like the idea
depends on the name, i think

hunkermunker · 02/07/2008 14:32

I don't think it's egotistical, unless you chose your own name

belgo · 02/07/2008 14:32

Alexandra and Alexander would be very confusing.

hereagain · 02/07/2008 14:34

Really does depend on the name...here's some variations - I think some work and some don't (I don't know why and this is just my opinion!)...see what you think:

Paula & Paul - no
Davina & David - yes
Christine & Christopher - yes
Daniella & Daniel - no
Philippa & Phillip - no (but Pippa & Phil - yes)
Henrietta & Henry - yes
Frederica & Freddie - yes
Erica & Eric - no
Jackie & Jack - yes (don't know why, but yes?!)
Alana & Alan - yes
Joanne & Joseph - yes
Samantha & Samuel - yes

Michaela & Michael - yes

I think the pattern here is how much the names sound the same when they are said...where the emphaisis is....for example Michaela puts the emphasis on the 'i' and aa an'i' whereas 'Michael' has the emphasis on the 'I'.....

Celery · 02/07/2008 14:37

We've done it with middle names - Frances and Francis.

Ledodgy · 02/07/2008 14:41

Nigel Lawson did it.

Ledodgy · 02/07/2008 14:43

My best friend is called Jo (joanne) and her son is Joseph and she always makes sure everyone uses his full name to prevent him being Jo too. Considering we live in Liverpool where almost every name is shortened (or lengthened for some reason) I fear she's fighting a losing battle!

Kewcumber · 02/07/2008 14:43

Would love to have given DS my name just becasue he would then be... "A Boy names Sue"!

minouminou · 02/07/2008 14:44

snigger
would he have to have a huge bar-fight with his dad, then?

hunkermunker · 02/07/2008 14:48

LOL Ledodgy - he'll be Joey lad, surely?

Ledodgy · 02/07/2008 15:02

Haha Hunker I told her he'll be Joey La.

hunkermunker · 02/07/2008 15:06

Ah, hey, our Joey la!
