What names would you suggest if we like Matilda and Jemima?

Hiya,
I was wondering if you could help us name our daughter who was born yesterday. Our two favourite names are Jemima and Matilda.
However, we lived in America for 5 years before moving back to the UK and have lots of friends over there and so I worry about the racist connotations of Jemima.
I also think Matilda is really popular and so that puts me off that one slightly!
Any other ideas are very welcome please!
Thank you x

Hiya,
Just thought I would update you all on the name we’ve chosen. After speaking with lots of our American friends we have decided to stick with Jemima as I think her generation are unlikely to make the association and she will be primarily growing up here where it isn’t a concern.
So we’ve gone with Jemima Nicole. Thank you so much for all your advice and ideas it was very much appreciated! x

Gorgeous! What a beautiful choice. Enjoy your lovely girl.

Congratulations OP! Hope you're settling in together.

I understand Jemima has some connotations in the US, but I'd imagine that once it's someones name that the negatives would take a back seat. Met a baby Donald (Donnie) other day, I doubt many people were thinking much about the US president after the first minute.

I really love the name. Good choice and congratulations again ❤️

Apphia. It’s an older English name which I think is beautiful. Also Jennifer, Susannah, Stephania?

What connotations does Jemima have?

Aunt Jemima is an American breakfast food brand emblazoned with a drawing of a black American woman which is somewhat caricature. The Aunt Jemima brand originated from 19th-century minstrel shows and the racist "mammy" caricature, but it was brought to life by Nancy Green, a real woman born into slavery who became one of America's first Black corporate models.

’The character helped sell an idealized version of the Old South at a time when the realities of slavery and racial violence were still within living memory. The cheerful Black woman presented as naturally devoted to cooking and serving white families stood in stark contrast to the actual experiences of enslaved Black women, whose labor and bodies had been exploited under slavery. Advertising transformed that painful history into something that could be packaged, marketed and sold to American families,’ African Archives post.

My first thought was also Tabitha - and I hadn’t made the Beatriz Potter connection!

Yup Tabitha is the one.

Jamima
Miranda
Philomena
Dorothea
Edwina
Marigold
Millicent
Camilla
Madeleine
Matilda

The association with Jemima Puddle Duck far out weighs anything negative.
Jemima and Jamima are feminine forms of James and James is still very popular - though I'm sure there must have been a bad James somewhere in history.
