1960s-1990s Girl Names

I'm looking for girl names that were common between the 1960s and 1990s that I may not have considered yet. An example would be names like Joanna and Stephanie. Majority of the modern popular names just don't do it for me. I want a name that feels familiar. A name where I have actually met an adult woman called that.

Tanya/Tania. I knew a few when I was little, but it seems to have become extinct...it was possibly replaced in posh circles by its full version, Tatiana, but Tanya was more universal than that.

Also occasionally Tonia (Antonia), from Doctor Zhivago.

I was born in '86 and i recall almost every girl in my class had the middle name Louise. So Louise was very popular but not as a first name.
Going based on names of whom there were more than one:

Catherine/Katherine,
Clare/Claire,
Charlotte,
Gemma/Jemma,
Jessica,
Joanna,
Rebecca,
Rachael (less usual spelling but there were 3 in my primary school),
Natalie,
Tracy/Tracey.

For slightly older names (going on my Mum, born '62 and her friends):
Carol,
Barbara,
Jennifer,
Patricia,
Cynthia,
Denise,
Mary.

I was a 90s baby.
I knew loads of girls called Sarah, Emma, Lauren, Rebecca, Amy etc. But the somewhat more unusual names I remember from school were: Michaela, Saffron, Charis, Felicity, Alannah, Verity, Demi, Robyn, Tamara, Cassandra, Georgina.

These lists are like reading my 80s school register. I suppose the names will be coming back as “old lady chic” soon. 😱

I hope so! I miss the standard 'average' names and the time when there was no emphasis placed on being 'unique'! I suppose I'm having children in the wrong decade.

Me too! I love so many of these names. Not pretentious and lovely on the ear.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/08/2026 17:14

They're lovely, varied lists of distinctive names that are great in their own right or easy to shorten.

Class lists in recent years have been quite repetitive of phonetically quite similar (often short vowelly) names that are very pleasant in their own right, but not substantially different to other popular names.

To be really authentic, the middle name has to be Louise Grin
