“Imagine having a gorgeous new baby and calling her Winnie!”

I remember giggling about this with a school friend when we were about 12/13. We were talking about what our grandmothers were called. Mine was Winnie; hers was Elsie. Circa 1993, we found it hilarious someone would call their babies Winnie and Elsie.

Just had a day out with the same friend and guess what her DD is called

(I doubt she remembers our conversation!)

I wonder if our DDs will find it hilarious someone once called their babies Jennifer, Laura and Michelle … probably.

I still think it’s a horrible name (Olive). I just can’t see anything appealing about it at all. I’m not a lover of what I think if as old lady plain names like Olive or Maude. They just make me think of hard faced, humourless Mrs Danvers types.

And showing my age, it makes me think of sixpence. 😂

I agree. My aunt’s family had a lovely lady named Olive, they have a few Olivia’s as children now. Much nicer than Olive.

I agree about Maud, so plain and miserable. I hate Nellie too, there was an old lady who I loved by. She was called Nellie and was horrible. We called her Narky Nellie 😂

My friend who had a baby at the same time as I did called her son Kevin.

I remember looking down at his little face asleep in his carry cot and thinking 'I ought to just call social services now'. This was back in the early 90's and Kevin was most particularly NOT a trendy name.

I don't think I'd turn a hair now though. I used to think Poppy was incredibly old fashioned (it was my aunt's name, born in 1920), now you can't move for them, so I clearly know nothing.

Ummmm Atlas is a hugely important figure from Greek mythology. He holds up the Earth! Ever heard of a map referred to as an atlas?

The Atlas Mountains in Africa are named for him. And the Atlantic Ocean derives its name from him.

As PP have said, Olive is the one I just can't get to grips with, it's so horrible sounding. But interestingly I haven't seen the return of Ethel...a step too far?

You never know. I didn't think Stanley, Wilfred, Elsie, Maud and Florence would be popular again, yet here we are!

And her middle name was Dell! As well as being her real name and not a stage name.

I think it is cute!

My late DM - who was born over 100 years ago was an Elsie Winifred and hated both names. She’d probably have been mildly horrified by their re-emergence!

I met a baby Alan recently. It really took me aback. Alan's are in their 50s to 80s.

I still think Winnie is dreadful.

So is Olive, Edna, Wilfred, Nellie.

I like the prettier old names like Mabel and Elsie and Violet.

Same! Arthur and Elsie are so old fashioned.... but we have a new baby Arthur (just born) in our wider family so I'm going to have to get used to it! It'll grow on me surely...?!

I have a quite traditional name. I’m in my 60s and have only ever met one other person with my name. I’ve always liked it and never had it shortened.

I like Maud but Olive is dreadful (On the Buses). Elsie is Tanner or Cabaret. Ivy is Tilsley.

Winnie is fine.

Mabel and Ethel are so frumpy-sounding.

I don't like Elsie or Olive, but I love Winifred and Winnie, and also Nellie, which to me has a very Dutch ring to it.

I know two Winnies, one short for Winifred and one short for Winona. I'm related to two very cool Nellies so the name has only positive associations for me.
