Different name styles for siblings

How important do you think it is to stick with the same name style? 2 daughters with vintage kind of names. Not massively out there. Due in 3 weeks. Middle name the older 2 have chosen but the first name i'm leaning towards seems a different style and more popular. Tbh there are no names i really really love so i am finding it tricky!x

Not that important.

User6761 · 17/08/2026 09:53

Not important. I think sibling names which are too matchy can be very twee.

NamingNoNames · 17/08/2026 11:03

I wouldn't let the older siblings choose a name. If you happen to love it then fine.

It depends on the names in question otherwise.
Mabel Rose, Edith May and Hermione Annabelle might seem a bit unconnected but they're individuals not a set.

I think the whole style thing is something you get on internet name boards but in real life it's only a small proportion that think about it. I wouldn't worry too much.

I think it's important to avoid questions as to whether the children are all related/ have the same father. People make assumptions about others based on their names among other things

DemBonesDemBones · Yesterday 04:44

@mathanxiety why do you think that’s important?

DemBonesDemBones · Yesterday 04:46

In answer to your question op I probably would think it was a bit weird if siblings were called eg Emily, Alexander and Chase or James, Henry and Chardonnay but I guess when they’re grown ups it wont matter at all.

NamingNoNames · Yesterday 10:01

@DemBonesDemBones , Probably because people would think that James and Henry, or Emily and Alexander, had been named by parents with completely different tastes to those who named Chase or Chardonnay.

When people ask you if you have children they say the strangest things like:
0 children - I'm so sorry/That's really selfish.
1 child - Just the 1?
2 the same - Were you disappointed to not have a son/daughter
3 - Did you keep trying until you had a girl/boy?/You'll have your hands full
Twins - Are they identical?
etc.

They say these inanities in front of the children.

Would you want to be the child whose paternity was questioned?

We adopted so my DC have the names that their birth mother's gave them. One of them has a very solid English name, like Thomas or John and the other has an uncommon Islamic name that is popular in Africa. Nobody has really mentioned the difference in style, occasionally they specifically say that the Islamic name is unusual and how did I choose it but not that it's hugely different to the English name.

NamingNoNames · Yesterday 10:58

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar , I know a couple who adopted two siblings, and the children have similar names. The parents are not the type you'd expect to have children called Chase and Chardonnay (not the actual names but that sort of vibe).
The parents gave them middle names that are more their taste. (something like James and Felicity).

You sound like a great mum. 🏆

Since you are choosing all 3 names, even if they are slightly mismatched it's unlikely to be as jarring as Henry and Chardonnay so I'm sure it will be fine.

I think it’s more a “if I like this name, what else might I like?” question rather than people wanting a matchy set? Or in a lot of cases it is.
