At a family gathering we discussed our names and whether we liked them or not so it got me thinking. I was born in the fifties and was as school with several Jane’s, college with more and taught in a school with three of us. So a popular name back then. I taught a Jane back in the nineties but since then have not come across any.
I love my name it’s simple, has associations with famous people and now not common.
So what is your name and do you like or dislike and why.

90s baby here. There were two other girls with my name in my class and I've only now really come across others in my work life, (but I do work in a large organisation) wasn't aby others at college at uni. I like my name, don't absplutely adore it, don't hate it, but I've never really thought about it too deeply tbh

I found this online tool, can’t remember where, you could enter your name and it gave results as to what years your name was popular.

My name was only popular in the year I was born,1966.

I was in the doctors recently and the lady in front of me in the pharmacy queue said her name, it was my name, as she left I said “bye, bye…., we have the same name”. We laughed and said goodbye.

I then went to the supermarket and there she was again. We said “hello …..,” and laughed.

I then went to Costa for a coffee and the lady behind the till had a name badge, same name. I said, this is getting to much and told her about my encounter. She asked how old I thought the other lady was, I said about the same age as me. The Costa lady told me her age, 59, same as me. The Costa lady then said “it’s funny, every….., I have met, not many though, are the same age”.

My name is not a common name but a famous literary name. And I like it very much.

Rhian - I love it. A connection to my heritage and it literally rolls off the tongue, because where I am from we roll our Rs! Surprising how many people struggle to say the English version though.

Daffodilsinthespring · 12/07/2026 11:37

Hate it. Have accepted it aged 57. I don’t like it because it can’t he shortened and has an ugly ending.

I also wanted a middle name, but didn’t have one. I do have one now though.

My dd has three names to make up for it and a first name with lots of shortenings.

WhiskeyGinger · 12/07/2026 11:41

Love it now but thought it was boring when I was about 13/14.

I like my name. It’s a classic, biblical name and so are my children’s names, so I obviously like that type of name. It’s a bit more popular in my age group than I would like, but it doesn’t bother me too much. I also like my middle name because it’s Welsh and I like that I have that link to my Welsh heritage. I used to have a Welsh surname but changed it when I got married, so I like that I still have one Welsh name. I gave both of my children Welsh middle names as well.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 12/07/2026 12:55

I’m fairly indifferent to my name. I don’t love it or hate it, but it’s not embarrassing in any way.

I’m a 70s baby and it is often mentioned as one of those names that was every other girl’s name at that time (although I never had another one in my class until secondary school), but I’ve also heard it described as ‘timeless’.

It just sounds a bit bland to me, especially in combo with my middle name. But it hasn’t negatively affected me in any way 😊

Squirrelsnut · 12/07/2026 13:02

I quite like my name. It's never been popular and is bit unusual. I've taught since the 90s and have never had a pupil with my name. I was born in the 70s.
I know lots of Sarahs around my age!

inkgirl · 12/07/2026 13:07

Don't really like my name but thats because people who bully me for it despite it being a popular name when I was younger

gingangirly · 12/07/2026 14:05

Never really had an opinion, it was a name of its time, from mid 50s to mid 80s with a definite peak in 1960. Had a few in my school but not huge numbers.

Never find it now for obvious reasons.

LollyWillow · 12/07/2026 14:29

I dislike mine. At 62 I have come to terms with it and accept that it is just part of who I am, but my family all use a shortened version which hate and find incredibly grating.

Pernicketywishes · 12/07/2026 14:34

Nope, never liked mine. Wish I’d changed it to my middle name years ago. It has a nick name which I also don’t like. It’s a very common 70/80s name but I just don’t like the way it sounds.

YourOchreCat · 12/07/2026 14:37

My name is Anne and I hate it. It’s prim, old-fashioned and so boring compared to basically every other name on the planet. I go by Annie which helps, but it makes me sad that my parents picked such a boring and unimaginative name. I saw another thread recently about whether names can be boring and I think mine is proof that they absolutely can be!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/07/2026 14:44

Lisa- very common at my primary school in the late 80’s. I really like it. It’s not so common these days, no weird connotations, does get shortened but not a long and complex spelling.

I like the name Lisa, there were a couple at
my primary school. I have a couple of
friends called Lisa also. It does have a certain charm, doesn’t it? But would not be used today.

Betadelta · 12/07/2026 14:48

I really like my name. It's relatively uncommon - I have met people with the same name, but not many, just two or three during my life plus a couple of well known people / fictional characters with this name. I don't think that's why I like it though, I just like the sound of it and I think it sounds like the name of a fun person!

ginasevern · 12/07/2026 16:09

Yes I like my name. It's a classic and (dare I say) quite classy. Think along the lines of Camille or Georgette - but not! I was a child of the late fifties when names like Jacky, Tracy, Julie and Sharon were popular (the equivalent of Darcy, Ellie, Evie etc these days) and there was a proliferation of them amongst my peers. I was the only one throughout school with my name and I haven't met many as an adult. So it's quite gratifying to be a bit different without having a completely "out there" name or one that totally defines an era.

BeLilacFawn · 12/07/2026 16:12

Used to not like it but now I love it. It’s a classic Scottish name but not very common, I’ve only met 2 or 3 others with my name ☺️

TheIdlerReturns · 12/07/2026 16:17

I do like my name now because I changed it by Deed Poll.

RandomUsernameHere · 12/07/2026 17:37

I don’t mind the shortened version, not keen on my full name but it doesn’t bother me at all as I only use it on official paperwork etc. The name is common in people my age (I’m 40) but has definitely lost popularity.

Buscobel · 12/07/2026 17:40

Never liked it because there was no one else with the same name. I always had to spell it and there were three possible endings. People usually chose the wrong one.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 12/07/2026 17:42

I do. It doesn't say anything about me - you couldn't guess how old I am or what kind of upbringing I had. It's never been very popular. It's easy to spell.

My only minor gripe is it can't be shortened, so it gets lengthened. Pet names longer than your actual name just seem a bit odd, but it isn't a problem at all.

HoldingOntoMySanity · 12/07/2026 17:44

I'm a 70s baby. Michelle. I am neutral-to-slightly-positive about it. Certainly do not hate it and like that it fits in various European langauges.

I went through phases as a teen wherre i wanted to change it. But my choices included 'Sage', 'Paisley' and 'Yvette'. Yvette I still like, the others not so much.

Littlebitpsycho · 12/07/2026 17:45

I quite like my name now I'm older (37) as its not very common now. I didn't ever hate it but was ambivalent previously. In primary school in the 90s there were about 5 of us, by secondary (early 00s) I think i was the only one.

Think my name is due a revival!
