Middle name thoughts?

We were thinking middle name of Winter. But it's possible she won't be born in Winter. Due date is December 21 which is the first day of winter

What do you think about the significance of a middle name that speaks more to the season we would be going into with her, rather than her literally being born in the winter season?

OP posts:

it doesn't matter whether or not she is born in winter, don't worry about it.

Frustratedsister · 09/07/2026 06:16

Sorry im not a fan.

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/07/2026 06:19

If you like the name it doesn’t matter when she is born. Personally, I like middle names to be family names.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/07/2026 06:51

It’s still pretty wintery at the end of November!

21 December is the winter solstice.
In the UK, the Met Office take the first day of winter to be 1 December.

I like Winter as a middle name.

It may be officially that winter doesn't start until December 21 (really? Are you sure about that?). Not many people would think the first 20 days of December are autumn though. Just doesn't seem right. Picture illustrating December on calendars show snow scenes etc.

To most people the whole month of December = winter. Winter as a middle name will be fine. I like it.

Sorry, another one who really doesn't like this name ~ it's a really harsh name IMO

Nearly all the children in our family have a family name as their 2nd name and my teenage DN recently told me how much she likes being named after her DGGM. I think it can be lovely for a child to have a connection to their family history in this way

NamingNoNames · 09/07/2026 11:58

I don't like it either. Call her Something Winter Surname.

Calliopespa · 09/07/2026 15:03

21 December is Winter- and will have been for several weeks according to BBC. If she arrives in October reconsider Autumn then.

sesquipedalian · 09/07/2026 15:06

OP, if she’s born in December it’s wintry enough. If you’re worried, give her the second name of Holly or similar.

WonderWeeksArentReal · 09/07/2026 15:18

Not quite what you asked, but Winter can be a surname (we have several local families with it) so people might get confused and think DC has a double surname without a hyphen.

Quizzled · 09/07/2026 15:25

I wouldn’t worry too much about official definitions of the season. December is a winter month to everyone in the northern hemisphere so I think Winter is a lovely choice of name to reflect that. 21 December will be winter solstice so if she does arrive on her due date it’s even more perfect.
Personally, I like a middle name that reflects something connected to time of birth - season, nature, birth stone, etc. I am not named after any family member so that connection means nothing to me.

KamikazePigeon · 09/07/2026 15:30

I think you're overthinking it. She'll probably be born in December, which most people think of as being winter, regardless of whether it's before or after the 21st. I think it's a really nice middle name - go for it!

I would argue late November to late February could be classed as winter so I think you’re overthinking
