Thoughts please.
I know what I think.

Caitlin definately. It is a real name, whereas katelyn makes you look like one of those parents who adapt perfectly good names to make their child look 'special'

oooh I didn't know that Turniphead!

I have a Caitlin. We do however know a couple of Kaitlins (though not Katelyn).

At christmas Caitlin got christmas cards with seven different spellings of her name on them

Well according to Beyond the name, Katelyn is a variant of Caitin, which is the anglisized form of CAITLÍN (sorry about the caps, just trying to keep the accent) which is the Irish form of Cateline, which is the old French form of Katherine.

Interesting how names evolve!

belgo · 25/06/2008 15:21

Turnip head - I would raise an eyebrow at Neve and Shivon as spellings, but Katelyn I find quite pretty and simple.

WinkyWinkola · 25/06/2008 15:21

Caitlin every time. Katelyn looks like a teenager has played with the letters. YOu know, Nik instead of Nick... . .

fishie · 25/06/2008 17:24

all the katharine type names get wildly varied spellings (i am one too)

actually, as a person with a th in my name, i have noticed that irish people tend to pronounce it 't' anyway, not sure whether this is a general accent thing or to do with the irish version of the name.

Caitlin

Katelyn looks like a made up name, or like the parent can't spell

keevamum · 25/06/2008 17:44

I toyed with the name for my two DD's but didn't go for it but may still use for no.3. My Irish grandmother was Kate and so I would personally prefer Katelyn so I could shorten it to Kate but unsure following this thread.

EtonsMessCat · 25/06/2008 17:48

The first spelling. Never heard of the second. Bit chavvy imo

GreenGodess · 25/06/2008 18:11

Caitlin - all the way the other spelling is really naff

Flumpybumpy · 25/06/2008 20:01

I have a Caitlin but people still spell it Caitlyn, Katelyn, Kaitlin etc....

I still love the name though.

snuffy143 · 25/06/2008 20:16

I have a Caitlin, too. I love it and we have never had a weird spelling! I think Katelyn is a bit chavvy, too! We picked it cos of its Gaelic connections.

c4it · 25/06/2008 20:19

I am a Caitlin and always have to spell it for people. I really like it because it is still fairly unusual to find anyone my age (30s) called Caitlin. I'm generally known as Cait though (could you guess?? )

Caitlin or Caitlyn

LyraSilvertongue · 25/06/2008 21:29

Caitlin, definitely.

bluenosesaint · 25/06/2008 23:15

Caitlin. No question.

RosaLuxembunting · 25/06/2008 23:18

So now does anyone have any suggestions for how I smile sweetly and keep my trap zipped about the inherent wrongness of the name being inflicted on this poor, innocent babe.

OP posts:
MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 25/06/2008 23:36

I think you do just that - keep smiling and saying 'such a pretty name'. It isn't inherently wrong in the minds of the people choosing the name and, ultimately, that's what matters. I have fierce opinions on names but only in the context of my own offspring's names do those opinions count for anything.

Ellbell · 25/06/2008 23:44

Both, imvho, are better than...
