If you saw the name Mariana written down with no context provided, how would you pronounce it? DH and I completely disagree on the pronunciation, and we both think we’re right. I reckon there’s also the possibility that we’re both wrong.

  1. Mar-ee-on-ah
  2. Mar-ee-ann-ah
  3. Mary-on-ah
  4. Mary-ann-ah

I would say marry anna

i Am from the north though so say bath and path with a short a vowel sound rather than Barth and parth from south so some southerner will say marry Arna

None of these!!

Mar-ee-ah-na

PP are being deliberately obtuse and contrarian. Ah-na, on-ah, and arn-ah sound very similar (practically the same) in many (I’d say most) accents. 1 and 3 cover the ah-na, on-ah, and arn-ah pronunciations. There doesn’t need to be 20 poll choices given to try to differentiate between the three when it’s quite obvious what the OP meant.

Not in my accent.

Ah-na is Are - Na

and

On-ah is On - Are (or just On-A, or On-uh)

Two completely different sounds.

You sound incredibly classist.

'On' doesn't sound anything like what I'd pronounce the 'ar' sound with. Very different. Arn-ah and Ah-na, yes, the same thing really. On-ah, entirely different.

The options for that syllable that OP gives are two versions of 'on' (ohn). Two versions of 'ann' (an). None fit with how I would say it with is arn/ahn.

Classist? No, I’m not sure how you’ve arrived at that conclusion or what that has to do with what I’ve said. I’m simply tired of posters being deliberately obtuse. It’s very irritating and pointless.

It's not at all obtuse to think 'on' and 'ahn' are entirely different sounds, which they are.

My father's name is John and he'd sure notice if I started calling him Jarhn.

We aren’t being deliberately obtuse.

We are pointing out that our accents mean we are pronouncing sounds differently to what you’re saying is ‘right’.

Which comes across as incredibly classist and ignorant.

Maybe not as much classist as a bit parochial?

MondaysFunday · 01/07/2026 04:12

To clear up any confusion, on-ah and ah-na do sound the same to me when I say them aloud. I hadn’t thought about it before I started the thread. I’d just written it as it sounded to me. Really, either way of writing that pronunciation works for me.

I’d say it maa-ree-ah-na

OtterlyAstounding · 01/07/2026 04:28

On-ah and ah-na sound the exact same to me, too. I can’t even begin to imagine how they could sound different. It must be very subtle.

Sandysandybeaches · 01/07/2026 05:56

Marry-AH-na. Which does not sound the same as op’s options in my accent .
