Pronunciation of Clementine

Chamallo · 26/06/2026 00:14

We’re having a girl and my front runner at the moment is Clémentine (I know the accent won’t be on passport).

Would you pronounce this Cle-mon-teen or Clem-un-tine (long i / eye sound)? Or something else?

And if this was your name, would it bother you if people (including different family members) pronounced it differently?

Clem un Tyne
Is how I said it in my head

HelenaWilson · 26/06/2026 13:11

Clemen TYNE in English

Unless you are Clementine Churchill, or named after her.

I don't know where Clemuntine comes from, but that just sounds ugly to my ears.

JuliettaCaeser · 26/06/2026 13:13

Neither is wrong just what you prefer. Personally prefer to rhyme with wine. Most people only need telling once it’s not complex.

That song dates back to 1884 so unless you are a time traveller and will be living in the 1890s it’s not an issue.

Iocanepowder · 26/06/2026 13:18

Sorry I think you would get a mix of both pronunciations and personally i just think orange.

user293948849167 · 26/06/2026 13:20

I would pronounce it Clem-un-tine (like Valentine)
It’s a pretty name

StationJack · 26/06/2026 13:20

In a cavern in a canyon exacting for a mine…

Just because you don't know it doesn't mean nobody else does.

And yet it’s still referenced and widely known, as suggested by many people on this thread, who presumably aren’t time travellers. It shows up in Outlander, Animal Farm, lots of films and TV. Lots of people have recorded it. Tom Lehrer used it as an example of why folk songs are awful and parodied it in the styles of Cole Porter, Gilbert and Sullivan, Mozart etc. It’s notorious in Ireland because the then NI secretary sang it on tv the same day eight people had been killed in a bombing. Like it or not, it’s still well-known.

Damn, I've been rumbled. I'll fire up the Time Machine and leave the Eloi alone.

Teen

Britneyfan · 26/06/2026 13:58

I love the name, I’d pronounce it the French way but I do speak French well having studied it to A-level. I think most Brits would pronounce it the other way naturally though. And yes it would bother me a bit. What about Amandine? Have always loved that name. More unusual so less chance of it being mispronounced? Or something like Camille or Fleur or even Amelie are likely to be pronounced close to correctly if you’re looking for a French name!

HelenaWilson · 26/06/2026 13:58

it's the English pronunciation.

I am English. I don't pronounce it Clemuntine.

TheOneAndOnlyLaura · 26/06/2026 13:59

All the British ones I’ve known have pronounced it -teen. Clemen-tyne is the standard American pronunciation (like the song).

StationJack · 26/06/2026 14:00

@HelenaWilson , you asked where it had come from. How do you say Helen or Helena?

Or Evangeline? My son had a friend called this in an area with no French people pretty much but it was pronounced correctly by people (well, close! At least the last bit!)

nocoolnamesleft · 26/06/2026 14:03

I’d pronounce like the baby orange, and the song.

noshade · 26/06/2026 14:05

Written with the accent I'd pronounce it roughly the French way. Without an accent, I'd be unsure and would double check rather than assuming.

theleftsuitcase · 26/06/2026 14:08

Clem en tyne

For both the name and the fruit.

@Tiggy321 , I can'timagine what part of the UK you were the British public will have heard of Prince Louis (pron. Lewey).

Where I live, Louis was always pronounced the same as “Lewis”, until very recently people began to pronounce it the French way thanks to Prince Louis. I think people would still ask “Is it Lewis or Loo-ey”?

I've only heard it as 'Louie' in the UK. Louis Mountbatten was a well-known name. Louis Vuitton and Louis Pasteur are also well-known names.
I would say Louis said as 'Lewis' was the American way with the British pronunciation being Louie.

I’d probably go clem-en-teen first but I wouldnt be sure and would expect I could be wrong and it was Clem-en-tye-n instead

LittleRobins · 26/06/2026 14:42

It’s Clemen-Tyne pronounciation but lose the pretentious accent on the e. It’s not needed.

It’s okay as far as fruit themed names go. Better than apple that’s for sure,

It's not pretentious if the OP is french.
