Thoughts on Saul for a boy? We'd be pronouncing it like Paul but with an S. I do not like the sah-ool pronunciation.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
lavendervibes · 24/06/2026 18:24

I like the name but you are setting the kid up for a lifetime of mispronunciation as how you are suggesting is not how it’s commonly pronounced.

Loures · 24/06/2026 18:28

Rhyming with Paul is the English pronunciation. Sah-ool is the Spanish pronunciation. Your preferred pronunciation with be fine, OP (unless you live in Spain).

Surely how OP plans to say it is the normal way? I have never heard it pronounced any other way.

LifeBeginsToday · 24/06/2026 18:30

No one is called Saul. Even Saul wasn't called Saul for long.

amispeakingintongues · 24/06/2026 18:35

It is nice and fairly uncommon. Do you realise it’s biblical meaning? Look up King Saul and Paul the Apostle if not.

HEC2746 · 24/06/2026 18:42

I love it and if I didn’t have a mild lisp DS
would have been called it. And I can’t imagine anyone pronouncing it other than like Paul.

Firebird83 · 24/06/2026 18:42

I like it. Also like Sol short for Solomon

🔝This. King Saul is a shady character, disobeying god after being elevated to first King of Israel by God. And Saul the Apostle changed his name to Paul to demonstrate a change in character- Saul prosecuted early Christmas while Paul became a missionary.

I hope you are not serious!

BrownRedPink · 24/06/2026 18:48

I like it. Saul is much fresher than Paul, as all of the Pauls that I know are at least 30 years old. (To be clear, I do like Paul. It was just very common for many years.) What a difference one letter can make!

StationJack · 24/06/2026 18:51

Saul does rhyme with Paul in English.

user293948849167 · 24/06/2026 19:17

I quite like it
Only ever heard it pronounced to rhyme with Paul in English

Yes. Overall, Saul = villain.

but each to their own!

barofsoap · 24/06/2026 19:33

Saul is pronounced like Paul in the UK - do you want to name your child after a baddy? just call him Paul instead

Gifteddeposit2008 · 24/06/2026 19:37

It's fine until you say 'our Saul'

TheSandgroper · 24/06/2026 20:15

Saul Eslake is very prominent down our way. You can Google him.

mamaduckbone · 24/06/2026 20:26

I taught a Saul once (rhymed with Paul) and he was a really lovely lad so I have only positive connotations.

PurpleLovecats · 24/06/2026 20:42

I love it.

Deadringer · 24/06/2026 20:57

Fine as long as your surname isn't Goodman.

MrsApplepants · 24/06/2026 21:02

Better call …

I don't know where you live, but, like everyone else on this thread, I've never heard Saul pronounced any way other than to rhyme with Paul.

I quite like it @KaleidoscopeDAN

ButtercupYellow26 · 24/06/2026 21:50

Saul became Paul.
You won't find many Paul's in today's classes.

CoddledAsAMommet · 24/06/2026 22:00

I like the sound, but would assume you didn't know of Saul/Paul and that when he was Saul he was quite the baddie.

It's like calling your child Cain or Delilah... Just not great connotations.

I don't think that true? The only Sauls I've known have been Mexican, so I am more familiar with the Sa-ool pronunciation, but it's well-known that it rhymes with Paul in English.

I don't like the name- meanings or historical/biblical namesakes don't bother me at all, I just don't like the sound (I don't like Paul either). But if you like it OP, I wouldn't be put off by the biblical character, there are plenty of Delilahs etc.
