Is Khalaya an actual name?

Thoughts on Khalaya for a girl? Has anyone ever heard of this being used as a name? Ever met anyone called this? My DH genuinely likes this, but I'm not entirely certain that it's an actual name and that he hasn't just made it up himself. I had to ask how to spell it when he said it!!

Im not a fan, i don’t like the sounds.
ive never heard the name before, but apparently (according to google spelt a bit differently ‘kalaya’) it is.

TappyGilmore · 24/06/2026 08:59

Never heard of it, but I just googled and apparently it is a name!

It’s a bit like Khalia, which definitely is a name
and not all that unusual.

I don't think it's an established name with history. I would say it's one of those modern 'names' that has recently been invented. It also sounds chavvy.

OriginalSkang · 24/06/2026 09:10

I've heard of Khalyla Kuhn, similar but different spelling. She is on the annoying side

MirandaBlu · 24/06/2026 09:15

For what it's worth, I know a Kalea (kah-LAY-ah) who grew up in Hawaii with Samoan parents; it's a traditional Hawaiian name and can be used for both girls and boys. Not sure if this is the same pronunciation but it looks like it might be.

Ishhhy · 24/06/2026 09:23

It's not a proper name to me. It seems like someone was trying to combine Kayleigh and Layla.

Also, why has he spelt it like that? Wouldn't Kalayah make more sense?

CandCand · 24/06/2026 09:57

It sounds like an African-American name. It's similar in style to Kamiyah, Aniyah, Khalia, Janiyah, Alayah, etc. (very popular names within the African-American community).

StationJack · 24/06/2026 11:47

How would you say Khalaya? What language is it from?

ginasevern · 24/06/2026 12:08

It sounds like a made up American name. Even if it isn't, it will sound chavvy.

Is it pronounced .... Car- lier... as in one who lies in cars?
Or ... Khah - LIER .. with the stress on the second syllable?

Scaryspicer · 24/06/2026 20:24

I thought it was pronounced like car lay a (like car Princess Leia)

mugglewump · 24/06/2026 20:26

I've taught loads of Kalaiyahs, Kalaayahs and Kalayias (other spellings are available) and Kaliyahs/Kaleeyas. Popular name for primary aged girls, but no consensus on how to spell it.

FWC2026 · 24/06/2026 20:31

I think it sounds/looks African.

i think with the right background it could be lovely, but if you're a pasty couple living in pasty couple 'burbs, not so much. It's likely to be shortened. So make sure you're happy with the most obvious ones.

where has he got it from?

my friend has a daughter with a completely made up name. She's a late teen now & doesn't mind it.

It's an Arabic name, hence the spelling in English being an approximation of the parents accents. I have usually seen it spelled Ghalia which looks very different, but Kh and Gh are the same sounds when anglicised from Arabic.

Really? Loads? How many in your current class?

They're not.

I'm not familiar with that name but would have assumed it was Arabic.

I knew an Australian woman called Kahlea-pronounced: Cah-lee-ah

A family member uses all of these names and more. I am not a fan personally and I do get
a a bit confused.
