I would like to vibe check these names. Many of them are more unusual so they probably have a stronger mental image or stereotype attached than names used more widely. What do you imagine boys with these names to be like?

Cosmo
Edmund
Hector
Conrad
Magnus
Lysander
Rafe
Ranulph
Peregrine
Benedict
Leonidas

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I imagine some of them may attend Eton! There are some lovely names in your list, but to me some seem a bit pompous

CoalTit · 24/06/2026 04:35

I know a couple of Australian Conrad/Konrad's. Very down to earth. Also very blond.
I know one Hector. He is a very normal middle-aged Mexican.
The other names in the list sound rather upmarket, but then you just have to meet one scumbag named Sebastian and your idea of what's posh changes.

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2026 04:38

Among the under 5s I know are a Conrad, Edmund (Ed), Hector (3!), Cosmo, Magnus (two - both scandi but Uk-based), Rafe (a lot along the Ralph, Raphael, Raffy), Ranulph and Benedict (Ben).

So to me, none of these is so unusual really.

Peregrine, Leonidas and Lysander more unusual. I suppose Leonidas will be plain old ‘Leo’, and Peregrine hardest to pull off.

Britneyfan · 24/06/2026 04:44

I like Cosmo it sounds cool. And Rafe sounds like a nice slightly posh boy next door, Ranulph similar, Conrad is nice sounds Scottish. Leonidas is quite nice, sounds Spanish. I LOVE Lysander, it reminds me of the knights of the round table, but feel like you’d have to shorten it for everyday use? Peregrine sounds like a girl to me (a posh and snooty one).

All the rest sound unbearably upper class toff type names, or slightly sinister/villainous vibes (Edmund is in my mind forever the traitor Narnia sibling even though he comes good in the end!) Hector in addition sounds Scottish a red haired and bespectacled geek to me lol. And Magnus is a chess prodigy but a bit of a cold fish. Benedict is very Catholic lol, also bespectacled geek vibes!

Spottyvases · 24/06/2026 04:46

Cosmo - n0pe
Edmund - ok -but there was a nasty one in CS Lewis book
Hector - lovely
Conrad- strong name
Magnus - great - like it
Lysander- love this - unusual
Rafe - ok for posh boy
Ranulph- see above
Peregrine - great for a falcon maybe not a person
Benedict- Cumberbatch? Bit of a mouthful - not sure
Leonidas - reminds me of those lovely Belgian chocolates.

You asked for vibes OP and those are my vibes 😃 Congrats on your pregnancy and enjoy choosing a name!

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 24/06/2026 04:55

Again?

TheSandgroper · 24/06/2026 05:11

Peregrine - I had a Perry growing up in rural Australia.

I think I was served by a teen Hector in Perth the other day.

Leonidas. You know your kid has to introduce himself to a lot of people, don’t you? Don’t make the first impression of him be “what was his mother thinking?” Just call him Leo.

Lysanders were very useful planes in the 1940’s. But as a name today? See my comment above.

yellowpinksky · 24/06/2026 05:54

Haven't you posted this list before?

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 24/06/2026 05:58

Leonidas are chocolates.

This ^

Sparklinggreen · 24/06/2026 08:52

I like:
Hector
Conrad
Magnus

Leonidas would almost certainly be shortened to Leo, defeating the point a bit

the rest I don’t like so much

Duvetdayforme · 24/06/2026 08:54

Edmund is OK but the rest are try hard

Conchiglie · 24/06/2026 08:56

I really like Edmund and Conrad and I quite like Peregrine.

Athwart · 24/06/2026 08:57

They’re all fine, though Leonidas will forever be the evil King of the Belgians and cause of horrific colonial sufferings for me. He’d almost certainly become Leo and Benedict would be Ben, though. Cosmo is too ‘magazine-y’ for me. Of your list, Magus is the nicest by far. I know two teenage Hectors who are ‘Hec’ to their friends.

babasaclover · 24/06/2026 08:59

Know a few dogs with those names. Not a fan

Sinkysocks · 24/06/2026 08:59

I really don’t like Hector or Cosmos but besides that they’re all perfectly nice private school names.

ChuisEpuisee · 24/06/2026 09:02

Cosmo - Reminds me of Nigella Lawson, and Bridget Jones' smug married friends. Not for me.
Edmund - nice name, makes me think of Narnia but he gets redeemed in the end so fine.
Hector - I have a soft spot for this because my dad used to sing The British Grenadiers, which mentions Hector and Lysander 😁
Conrad - nice name but somehow a teensy bit Third Reich.
Magnus - Vikings. No real suitable nickname.
Lysander - see above but to a lesser extent. I knew a lovely female Lysandra but personally I'm not convinced Lysander is due a revival.
Rafe - I don't mind this
Ranulph - again, no good nickname. Ranulph Fiennes will always be the association as he's the only famous one.
Peregrine - meh
Benedict - lovely name, timeless.
Leonidas - not unless you're Greek.

The evil king of the Belgians was Leopold.

rileyy · 24/06/2026 09:08

Initial vibes…

Cosmo - cartoon character

Edmund - fine. Edward is better.

Hector - 80+ grumpy old man

Conrad - cute

Magnus - could go either way depending on what kind of personality he ends up with

Lysander - diabolical. Sounds like a diagnosis.

Rafe - eh

Ranulph - please don’t

Peregrine - bully bait. Bad idea.

Benedict - sure

Leonidas - will he be raised as an Ancient Greek spartan..?

Quizzled · 24/06/2026 09:11

Love:
Magnus
Ranulph

Ok:
Hector
Conrad
Lysander
Benedict

Dislike:
Cosmo - sounds like a nickname for a cocktail
Edmund - a weaker brother to the strong Edward
Rafe - sorry, I can only see/hear rape
Peregrine - a name you might use for a book character who was posh and silly
Leonidas - makes me think of chocolate

Scaryspicer · 24/06/2026 09:11

Would have used Lysander in a heartbeat but dh vetoed it!
i also love Magnus (and not on your list but my favourite name I’ll never get to use is ‘Stellan’ which is a similar vibe)

Not a fan of the rest but they’re not bad!

Needmorelego · 24/06/2026 09:13

Sounds like the class list for Year 13 at the School for Good Looking Rich Vampires.

Katiesaidthat · 24/06/2026 09:13

Leonidas and Hector- if you are into the Iliad. I like Hector, Leonidas you can pull off if you are Greek/Greek related.
Edmund will always be the Blackadder
Benedict are posh eggs
Peregrine is a water brand? And reminds me of falcons and eagles
Never heard of Rafe, but strangely like it.
Lysander makes me think of headlice
Ranulph, mmm a bit strange
Magnus is pretentious, unless you are scandi
Conrad is ok, altough slightly old fashioned
Cosmo is ok.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 24/06/2026 09:13

I love Lysander.

MrsKateColumbo · 24/06/2026 09:42

Im in SW london so these are all "normal" names to me.

Cosmo - DH wouldn't allow this name but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it, there was a Cosimo in baby group which is beautiful.
Edmund - underused, low key
Hector - i know 1 or 2 DC with this name,
Conrad - my cousin named his child this name. Nice.
Magnus - LOVE LOVE, very popular
Lysander - a bit too AMND for me
Rafe - nice, popular
Ranulph - less common, ok but don't love
Peregrine - ok I wouldn't use this as there seems to be a "pretentious" connection but I LOVE this. As a teen I was obsessed with LOTR and Pippin was my favourite character, I desperately wanted to keep this for a son when I was an adult but other people's perceptions put me off. He is still my fave Tolkien character 💖
Benedict - nice
Leonidas - nice, I know 1 or 2 as their parents are from mainland Europe somewhere it's fairly popular, quite cute on them
